New York, What's best way to Yankee Stadium from Midtown
Hello everyone. I will be vacationing in NYC this summer. I've been there many times and always loved it. This time though, I will (believe it or not) take in my first Yankee game. It will be a night game.
I will be staying at the Park Central hotel which is located at 7th and W55th.
I wil be with my wife and two teenage sons. (15 and 12)
What would be the best way to get to and from the game? Subway, car service or Cab? I certainly don't want to take my car. I'll leave it at the hotel parking during my entire stay.
If people suggest the Subway then tell me, what are the wait times like after the game?
I would probably go a couple hours early, have dinner near the Stadium (are there plenty of places to grab a bite around the Stadium?) ... so I will probably be looking to be at the Stadium between 4-30-5pm ... and of course, given the length of the game, expect to be exiting the stadium at 10:30 to 11:00 pm.
Best suggestions? For safety and for sheer convenience.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

You should take the subway back and forth. You can get a cab or car service TO the game - althouhg you will be caught in a massive traffic jam and it will be big $. but coming back there are no cabs (in that neighborhood) and arranging to meet a car service can be problemaatic.
As for eating - although the area around the stadium is improving somewhat it still doesn;thave much except bars and it not an area you want to be wandering around. I would get to the stadium early (and don't forget to leave time for the security line - no alcohol or large bags and expect purses to be examined) so you can 1) view monument park (incredible - but it closes 45 minutes before game time) and 2) sees some of batting practice. there are a ton of places to eat IN the stadium - actual food - not just hot dogs/junk - and I would head for one of those. Just go to the website to check them out - for budget and menus.

Subway, no question. Weekday: B; Weekend: D (both from 53rd and Seventh), running every 10 minutes. For the return trip, the trains run every 20 minutes at that time of night: Weekday or weekend: D. Travel time in all cases is about 35 minutes.

Subway is best and pretty fast. It runs frequently, but you may have to wait for a couple of trains after the game depending on crowds. So maybe a 20 minute wait. There are few good places to eat nearby. So eat before you go or at the stadium.

If you want to eat within walking distance of the stadium, and you are adventurous about food, I can recommend The Feeding Tree @ 892 Gerard Avenue, near the Courthouse. Very friendly, no frills West Indian serving wine and beer, and fruit juices.
The Court Deli is also popular but I am not a big fan.
There are lots of food booths inside the stadium including a few good ones, as mentioned in post above.
We often bring our own picnic; you have to pack it in a clear plastic bag, I believe. Drinks w/o alcohol in plastic bottles are ok.
YOu do not have to worry about personal safety in the environs of the stadium. I am female and the area feels totally comfortable and not threatening. Nearby streets will be teeming with people on game nights.

I don't think it will be very convenient for you, but my favorite way to go to Yankee Stadium is on the ferry. It leaves from Weehawken and stops at the South Street Seaport and one other stop (I believe).

Thank you all for the suggestions. Amazing advice thank you. I think we will eat in the Park. We want to get there early. I want to take in the atmosphere and walk around the park. Someone mentioned the security lines.... do they move pretty quick?
Are cameras allowed? Pocket point and shoot cameras? I know here in Toronto, professional or semi pro DSLR cameras with greater than 70mm of focal length lenses or not allowed so I don't want to lug around my main camera and then be denied access as a result.
As for the subway back to the hotel, is the Subway safe at that time of night? (I presume 11pm or so .. I don't want my yountest getting freaked out....then again, we will probably be commuting in a full train of Yankee fans and their families too after the game so I am assuming the train will be fine)
Lastly, what station do I exit at for the tadium and is it much of a treck to the ballpark from the Subway? (I'll be in Section 228)

The station for Yankee Stadium is called . . . 161st St-Yankee Stadium. You will know the stop because all the people wearing Yankee caps and jerseys will get off the train. The station is right next to the stadium.

The B train only goes as far as Yankee Stadium during rush hour (see dashed line on subway map). To get back to your hotel from Yankee Stadium, you will need to take the D train. You probably won't see a B train because by the end of the game it will be past rush hour and the B train is no longer running.

I live in the shadow of the stadium on the upper west side, so can tell you the advice you have gotten so far is absolutely right.
The trains will be FULL of people so you don't need to worry, but you might think about taking the ferry, it's a great way to get there and back. The ferry stops at 34th St on the east river and will drop you back off there, so you can get a cab or bus to the west side and then the train to your hotel, be much more fun and not as crowded. You might do a search engine for ferry to Yankee stadium for more details.
If you do the subway, the D is the way to go, or if you are on the east side the 4 or the 5 stops at the stadium as well.
One more option is to take the A train to 155th St and take a walk over the 155th St bridge to the stadium and then follow the crowd back over the bridge to the A when the game is over. Or when you get back into Manhattan you can grab a service car back to your hotel.

If you take the 4 you can have a wander around Grand Central (and maybe pick up some food for the game) and then take the 4 to the end of the line and hike around Woodlawn Cemetery before going back to the game!
