New York: What is the travel time from JFK to Penn station, and can I do OK with luggage?
I'm thinking of arriving in the morning and I need to meet my friend at Penn station. However, I'm coming from a conference (headed to another conference) and will have some luggage. What's the travel time by train? Is it easy to do with luggage?

From Penn take the E train to Surphin Blvd. From there take the Airytsin to your terminal.
It should take about 1 1/4 hours.
There are elevators and escalators at Sutphin when you transfer. You will have more trouble negotiating the steps at Penn with luggage.

The LIRR is faster. Twenty minutes from Jamaica to NY Penn station. Don't know what time you're arriving JFK, and the trains going into city may be crowded.
The transfer from the AirTrain to the LIRR is also easier and faster, as both are above ground. The AirTrain is on top, and LIRR one level down. The "E" train is underground at the Sutphin Blvd/Jamaica stop.
It takes about 10 minutes from your terminal to Jamaica on the Airtrain, depending on which terminal you arrive from.
Overall, you should be able to get to Penn Station in about 45-50 minutes using the LIRR. A little bit faster but cost a little more than the E train.

Agree that the AirTrain to the LIRR train is the better option with luggage but I wouldn't do it during rush hour. If you're traveling after 9:30 you should be fine. Your other option is to take the Airport Express bus and get off at Bryant Park and take a cab from there to Penn station. Bryant Park is currently the first stop in Manhattan (instead of Grand Central) since the steam pipe explosion. When is this happening?

I only asked wondering if this would be at holiday time. You should be fine. What other airport are you considering? EWR? Similar scenario to JFK. Train or bus but the bus would be to Port Authority.

I assume you're coming in from Hawaii?
There are lots of red-eyes from the west coast that arrives NYC before or around 6am - Virgin America, AA, DL to JFK. Just need to take a day-time flight from Hawaii that gets to the west coast by mid-evening.
But the earliest in the day you can get to NYC is by flying Aloha to Orange County (John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana), then connect to CO to EWR. It arrives Newark at 5:12am.

From MSY, the earliest arrivals are CO to EWR (10:35a) and Jetblue to JFK (10:50a).
AirTrain to LIRR for JFK, AirTrain to NJTransit for EWR. Timewise and hassle-wise, it's a wash. JFK a few bucks cheaper.
If you use a taxi or car service, again no real winner.

OK sorry for the trouble!! Looks like flying to New York won't work for this trip due to the timing. I'll have another puzzling travel question (MSY Yto PHL) up shortly. Thanks for your patience!!!
