Is the Guggenheim or Met within walking distance of Fifth Avenue/42nd Street area?

Met and Guggenheim are in the 80's about a 2 mile walk from 42nd Street. Walking distance to some but not to most. Could make for a very nice walk in the cool fall weather of October and November but I recommend the uptown Madison Avenue bus and conserve your energy for the Museums.

It's a pretty long walk. <BR>40-50 blocks which translates to about 2-2 and a half miles). If you want to know if you will be in the same neighborhood, the answer is clearly 'no'. <BR>If you're a walker who wants to take a nice stroll up 5th avenue once to see the sites and then end up at the museums <BR>(or in the other direction) it's doable if you've got an hour or so to spare. <BR> <BR>Keep in mind that avenues are about the length of three regular blocks, so if you're at 42nd street and 5th avenue, that's a straight 40 block walk up to the Met at 82nd and 5th. If you're at 42nd and Broadway or 7th avenue (Times Square) add another 6-8 blocks to your calculations. <BR> <BR>Busses run down 5th avenue and up Madison (the next avenue over east) regularly if that's the way you wnat to go. The subways on the East side are over on Lexington, further east, so <BR>they aren't very practical for these kinds of trips. <BR> <BR>Hope this helps

Previous posters are correct. North/south blocks are 20 to the mile! In normal weather it's a very nice, scenic walk.

Howard was not assuming and the other posters are correct. Going north/south - 20 blocks to a mile. Going east/west (avenue to Avenue) 3 blocks is almost the same as 3 north/south blocks. I have checked this using my car's odometer. The 3 block measure does not apply 5th to Madison or from whatever avenue is just east or west of Broadway when walking to Broadway

Hey, x, my only response to your comment: I added a helluva lot more than you did to this thread! (I certainly home that you have better things to do that attack me!)

My wife and I made that walk once. We were planning on catching a taxi but never got around to it. It's a great way to see NY. We even walked back.

I think I saw Fodors (or another reputable travel info provider) measure midtown streets at 22 blocks/mile.
