New York to maine

My husband and I are traveling from New York to Maine we have about 10 days and need any travel help and advice you can give me. We thought about taking the train from New York to Boston then renting a car does that sound like a good idea ? It is our 35th anniversary . Thanks in advance for any information!

What do you envision doing/seeing in Maine? Hard to help without knowing some basic things.

You won't need a car in Boston and parking is expensive so renting a car when you are ready to leave is a good idea.

When are you traveling?

Good idea to take the train to Boston and rent one when you are ready to leave.

If you like the train into Boston South Station, you can also take the Downeaster train from Boston North station into Maine and then rent a car.

I thought of the train to Portland, but there are many places to see between Boston and Portland so I recommend renting the car in Boston.

Put Maine in the search function for Fodors so you can read old advice/other posts.

If you don't plan on spending any time in Boston, renting car might be cheaper in Portsmouth or Portland. There is bus service from South Station to those cities. The driver will put your luggage into the bottom storage area of bus. These are routes that also serve Logan Airport.

We carry bag chairs and picnic supplies in our car because there are so many places where you can take a break from driving and just enjoy looking at the ocean.

Some of the things we like are anything outdoors, fishing, biking, whitewater rafting, whale watching, lighthouses, seeing the beautiful scenery, live music.....

Anything outdoors certainly sounds like Acadia NP.

Miles of car-free carnage roads for biking, ocean kayaking, beautiful scenery, whale watching trips available from Bar Harbor, and more.

Check the schedule at Maritime Museum in Bath, ME for their lighthouse cruises.

Consider a boat trip to Monhegan Island but take along a picnic lunch to eat along the trail while enjoying the view. We took the boat from Boothbay Harbor but there are trips from other locations.
