For what's happening check out the New York Magazine and Tmeout New York web sites - there's tons of stuff - but don;t know what you're interested in.

For hotels I would run a quick check on Priceline - to see if there are any last minute deals - otherwise you may be stuck somewhere really basic - a couple of the search engines aren't showing anything in that price range.

Where you stay sort of depends on what you plan to do. If you want a midtown location, I would phone the Algonquin. Someone told me they were offered (in person) a room there for this weekend for $120/night b/c they weren't busy. It's an old but historic hotel. Rooms are small but the place has charm and for that price would be a bargain. Good coffee shop (the Red Flame) right next door for quick and cheap breakfast etc. Midtown location.

The Radio City Apartments would be another central location that might be in your budget.

easyclicktravel.com has the Eastgate Tower hotel (but it's not named, it says "off the record") for $148 for a studio suite which will be like an apartment. It's the only one prices at $148. Another good midtown location.

If you want downtown location check the Cosmopolitan in Tribeca.

Went to Priceline and wow! Got the Hilton Times Square for $115.

Now where is a "SAFE" place for a nighttime drink and to hear some good
muisic for a single female in the city. I like Jazz, old school R&B music.

How do I get from Penn Sation to the Hilton Times Square 234 W 42nd St by subway?

Thanks

You can walk there. It's only 8-9 blocks (less than a half mile).

If you are thinking you want to take subway because of luggage, you might be better off with a taxi since it really is such a short distance. If you really prefer subway, take the A, C or E (8th Ave line) or 1, 2 or 3 (7th Ave) uptown, one stop to Times Square. By the way, there is an entrance to the Hilton on 41st St - less of a hassle than 42nd St.

Chez Josephine is a French rest. right near your hotel with a nice bar too. Fun atmosphere and live piano music. For jazz in the area, BB Kings (look at the website and see who's playing) and Iridium is another jazz place not far.

The newest "cool" jazz place is Dizzy's Coca Cola near Lincoln Center in the Time Warner Building. It's also got nice views.

bigapplejazz.com has a list of jazz places around town.
