New York Theatre
 

My husband and I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary in September and are planning to spend 6 days in New York (1st time). We'd like to attend a broadway production and have considered "Fiddler on the Roof". However, I was recently told (by a friend who was just in NYC) that it's been closed down because of bad reviews!? Is this true? It's still listed on the ticket websites. Any info or suggestions, anyone? Also...what kind of attire should we plan on wearing to NY theatre? People seem to be dressing more casual at the shows we attend in Minnesota. We both enjoy dressing up--is a tux and evening wear too much?? Thanks!

Join Playbill, as it cost nothing to join and their website offers discount tickets for many shows. I have not seen anything about Fiddler closing. You can search this website by typing in Fiddler and comments about the show will come up. There are so many great musicals that you have quite a choice. As for dress, you will see everything. I would leave the tux and formal attire at home and opt for a nice dress or pants outfit. Many people head straight to the theater after a day of sightseeing, so you will see a variety of things.

A tux and evening gown are way over the top unless its the first night at the opera.

Most people - especailly locals will be in something equivalent to business casual. If its a Saturday night you may see some suits and dresses - but probably not many. You will probably see more in casual/ratty (shorts and tee shirts) than in suits and dreses.

Fiddler on the Roof is very much alive. If you wait until the end of July or early August, there will be discount tickets available for shows in September, possibly Fiddler.
As others have said, leave the tux and fancy evening wear home.

If you can't see Fiddler I Can I also recommend another great show "Golda's Balcony" at the helen Hayes Theatre. A one woman show on the last years of the life of Golda Meyer. It was amazing. It is a short play so you can do something after the theatre like try and catch Bobby Short at the Carlyle. Rumor has it that he really is going to retire this year!

1.I also hihgly recommend the Lower East Side Tenement Museum .(90 Orchard Street) I have done it twice and am still in amazement on how our ancestors made it! They have actually saved an old tenement building from the wrecking ball and it is preserved just as it was at the turn of the century and up to the 40's. Great tour guides.

2. ALso the Teddy Roosevelt Birthplace is very interesting - off 5th avenue.

3. The Frick Art Museum is small and comprehensive - not as overwhelming s the Metropolian Museum of Art - that is one that takes several days to go through unless you are interested in a special exhibit, it can't be done in one day.

6. Get yourself a New York CIty Neighborhoold walking Tour book at Borders. We love to walk the neighborhoods and see the various styles of homes, etc.

7. The Television and Radio Museum is an interesting place. You can view old TV Shows and listen to old radio shows.

8. ALso buy a comprehensive subway ticket that allows you to take 10 rides (I think it is 10)or they have 7 day pass. You won't have to wait in long lines to buy your tickets each time.

9. Luppo's for dinner. you have to call 30 days in advance for reservations but worth it. We had a great time and fabulous food. Also Gramercy Tavern- another 30 day in advance reervation required.
