New York Subway Pay with Cash

I'll be in New York City with my wife for 2 1/2 days and don't expect to ride the subway more than a couple of times.

Is it possible to pay using cash?

vjpblovesitaly May 29th, 2014 07:29 AM

You already asked about paying for the subway

You can buy a Metrocard with cash.

I bet you could have figured this out when you got to the station but you seem to be a micromanager.

NYC subways often terrify the uninitiated. Too many stale Letterman jokes and re-runs of 1980 movies.

lovesitaly,

Your memory is obviously better than mine.

I just like to know what I'm doing to save time and hassles. When I go somewhere I don't end up standing a half hour trying to figure out which way to go.

AAFrequentFlyer May 29th, 2014 11:47 AM

why not just do some research of your own?

Isn't that what he's doing here?

AAFrequentFlyer May 29th, 2014 12:25 PM

yes, but why not go to the source? that's all I'm saying.

sf7307 May 29th, 2014 12:49 PM

Well, I know from experience that "the source" is often very confusing, and usually the people on this forum are much much better at explaining :-)

vjpblovesitaly May 29th, 2014 12:55 PM

which they already did

nstevey May 29th, 2014 01:26 PM

Bus takes coins but 10 quarters for fare, whole lotta clinking goin' on in the pockets.

Metrocard machines take bills and of course do the few remaining human staffed booths.

Some stores and newsstands sell Metrocards but they might charge at bit more.

I'll be travelling with 2 adults & 2 kids.
Will all using 1 MetroCard be a nuisance at the turnstile?

fmpden May 29th, 2014 01:50 PM

Not sure if he knows what he is doing. The OP originally stated the end of May. Now it is the end of May and still coming? As a senior I often forget what I have posted so maybe a month later is not too bad.

2idols,
One shared card between four people is possible, but some find it tedious to pass the card from one person to the next. How old are the kids?

If during rush hour? In general, that's going to be a big headache. And more importantly, are your kids shorter than 44 inches?

2idocs May 29th, 2014 03:34 PM

Both teens.
Original plan was 2 cards & have each parent swipe for a kid & then for themselves. I'd think it'd be well worth the extra dollar + we may separate at some time

nstevey May 29th, 2014 04:22 PM

Actually now that I think about it, 1 card would work fine for both styles of turnstyles. The hip height and door. The card master hangs back and swipes for everyone and then he swipes for himself.

nytraveler May 29th, 2014 04:31 PM

Unless you get separated in the crowd.

At rush hours all of the turnstile are busy and someone clogging one up fumbling back and forth to get 4 people through on one card may NOT be popular with people standing behind them.

Myer May 29th, 2014 05:04 PM

Some posts are amusing. Probably mine as well. Some people are quite insulting. I'll have to remember those names when they ask a question about many of the places I've been to.

Yes, we are going the end of May.

Tomorrow (Friday May 30th) morning arriving at LGA around 2PM.

Will cab from LGA.

Then figure out what to do for the subway rides. Not too many I figure. But for sure a few.

nstevey May 30th, 2014 12:53 AM

Fumbling back and forth? Huh?

One person hangs back with the card, stands aside turnstile, slides the card, person walks through, slides again, walks through, etc... There's no fumbling. There's no passing back. There's less fumbling because only one person needs to handle the card. He can slide the card right after the person is through probably a tad faster than if people go separately.
