New York - Seafood Restaurant

Can anyone suggest a great seafood restaurant in the Midtown/Times Square area?

Foley's Fish House

You also might consult the website chowhound.com

The finest would have to be LeBernardin. Perhaps that's a little more formal and expensive than you wish? I also love Kellari's Taverna, for great grilled fish and Greek specialties in a wonderful setting.

Agree with the other posters:

Le Barnardin is fantastic seafood - probably the best in the city - annd priced accordingly

For a great tourist venue with good sea food go to Sea Grill in Rock Center

Foley's Fish House is also good but somewhat more casuale

For prices and menus (good fish isn't cheap - esp in midtown) go to menupages.com, which also has diner comments.

Esca is wonderful Italian seafood on 43d St.

Further east is Pampano - great upscale Mexican seafood. www.modernmexican.com

NP - I've never eaten in Kellari's Taverna, but just last night I had dinner in Kellari's Parea (owned by same group) on East 20th....lovely setting, good salads, but all four of us did not like our entrees....it was so disappointing.

Another vote for Le Bernardin. I once went to the Ocean club but it was long ago not sure what it's like now.

Milos

Sea Grill at Rock Center

Aquavit

My favourite seafood restaurant in Manhattan is Aqua Grill, but it is downtown. You'd have to take a cab, but it would be oh so worth it for the salmon with falafel crust. :)

Esca!

I would also suggest the Grand Central Oyster Bar, 42nd and Lex Ave or Docks, 40th and 3rd. Both are very good.

Get out of the Times Square area.

Lure in SoHo is great ... www.lurefishbar.com

If you like lobster, then Ed's Lobster Bar is fantastic. It's right around the corner from a 6 subway stop.

On the Upper West Side, not far from Times Square, you'll find The Mermaid Inn. Great!

Another vote for Esca & Kellari on West 44th st.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!!

Le Bernardin sounds wonderful but it is probably out of our price range for this trip. We are looking for something less formal, it doesn't have to be in the Times Square area.

Downtown:
Mermaid Inn
Mary's Fish Camp
Pearl Oyster Bar
Aquagrill
BLT Fish
Pings

In midtown - Avra, Esca, Aquavit, Milos, Blue Fin

Uptown - another branch of Mermaid Inn,

check out menus, addresses and prices at

Foley's in the Renaissance hotel is closed for future info.

Blue Fin in the W Times Square hotel is pretty darn good seafood if a bit pricey. The Sea Grill at Rockefeller Center is very nice (especially in winter overlooking the ice rink) but also a bit pricey.

For more affordable options head out of midtown to some of these others. One that hasn't been mentioned is Blue Water Grill near Union Square with live jazz downstairs.

Blue Water Grill has good food but you can be deafened if not careful.
