New York - October with 7 yr old
My daughter her daughter who is 7 yrs old are doing a three day New York City vacation in October (oct 12).
Do you have suggestions on an itinerary? Here are a couple things they considering: Half off ticket booth for play Statue of Liberty Thank you for your help! |
That is probably one of the busiest long weekends. I hope they have got reservation for hotel already and the SoL. Half price tickets for a play that a 7 yr old may also be tough.

Go to the Bronx Zoo.
|
Great links for ideas w/ children including itineraries - wow thank you.
Also - thank you for the zoo idea. More ideas are welcomed. |
Want to go Statue if Liberty, is the staircase to the torch open!
|
If they are staying in Manhattan the Central Park zoo is easier to get to, very nice for kids, and brings them into Central Park too.
|
The Statue of Liberty's torch has been off limits for several decades. You can go to the crown, but you have to reserve months in advance. It's unlikely there are still tickets for early October, but you should look, now.
|
smetz - Yes, the Central Park Zoo is easier. But the Bronx Zoo its an extraordinary place. However, with only 3 days in NYC, perhaps Central park Zoo is a better plan.
|
Sunitoomas - please stop shilling for this company.
|
For a 7 year old I would definitely do the Museum of Natural History - kids all love dinos and gems are also fun for girls. She also might enjoy the Met (Egyptian collection and Costume Institute).
Also good are the Staten Island ferry or one of the Circle Line boat trips (the latter with commentary - the former really for commuters but a decent view of the Statue of Liberty). Also Top of the Rock and consider FAO Schwartz toy store. And possibly a broadway show geared to kids like Lion King. |
American Girl? I don't know know if it's any different that other American Girl stores but always seems to be a hit with my boyfriend's nieces when they come into the city.
|
Thank you for the crown reservation suggestion and for museum, costume, mets, lion king, central park zoo, American girl - your suggestions are appreciated.

What about a horse carriage ride in Central Park?
|
While I would never do a carriage ride myself, I think it might be a good choice for you. Just realize that it's expensive and you don't go far.
Your daughter might be a bit young for a play, but look at Cinderella, Lion King, and Matilda. The Lion King does not generally discount. And see what's playing at the New Victory Theater, which is family friendly. |
Does the 7 year old like climbing 200 stairs to the crown?? You might also want to visit the Children's Museum because there's a great exhibit on for children of all ages about Jazz. www.cmom.org . The Swiss Cottage Marionette theater will be doing a sequel to Hansel and Gretel based in NYC. Open House New York is that weekend and there are plenty of activities for kids and I am a great believer in taking kids to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. http://thestarryeye.typepad.com/expl...-and-kids.html

I think all of the tickets to the crown are going to be gone by this time - you might still get tickets to go inside.
I remember going with my parents when I was about 8 and my dad and I climbed as far as we were allowed - in the last ice age - think it was the crown. My mom stayed in the base with my 4 YO brother. |
For a 7yr old it can be a fun adventure to seek out neighborhood playgrounds, and make it a point to stop and enjoy/play, not just walk by in a hurry to get to another NYC must see sight.

Crown access reservations are indeed sold out until mid November, mid week.

Re: Statue of Liberty
I wonder if there is a last minute resource for people who do no show up for their hike to the crown? |
