New York Lodging at Thanksgiving

My recent college grad daughter moved to NYC for his first corp job and we are visiting her this coming Thanksgiving. She is living in the East Village and we want to find a "reasonable" lodging in a quiet neighborhood anywhere midtown south or even outside the city within a decent travel time to her. The rates are even higher than normal at that time of year, so wanted to get some ideas.
Any ideas close to city in safe, quiet neighborhood with easy subway ride into NYC>

Thanks.

I live in the EAst Village and see visiting many parents walking with the schildren, usually daughters, in the neighborhood.

That is a difficult week to get reasonable priced accomodations. There is a Hojo on Houston and there is a palce where friends and family stay called Park South on East 28th which is a short subway ride.

you should also look into priceline. Any hotel along the east side would be most convenient by sybway to the east village area. You can also check out the Washinton Sq. hotel although I have no idea what their rates are these days. The larchmont is a reasonable place on a quiet village street but has shared baths. If that's not a problem for you it may be worth checking out.

Besides the Hojo, I think there may be a holiday inn somewhere in the lower east side area.

Staying outside the city seems like it defeats the purpose of being near your daughter. If you look at a map, you'll see the closest area outside Manhattan but near the East village is in Brooklyn. If budget is an issue, I suppose Brooklyn is an option for you, but otherwise, I'd stay in Manhattan.

Without a specific budget and dates, it's hard to help you. There are quiet neighborhoods IN Manhattan that wouldn't be far from the east village. greenwichvillagehome.com is basically an apt. rental in the west village that rents for about $195/night.

washingtonsquarehotel.com is the only regular hotel in the area with private bathrooms. They have rooms for ~ $225/night when available, but they're already booked for Nov 23-24.

There are some other village b & b's but before I start listing them, need your budget and how many nights as most have minimum stays.

The parksouthhotel.com is in midtown south and can be an affordable place to stay. Also check quikbook.com for prices.

The Grand Union hotel has been recommended here as a decent budget option in midtown south. Read reviews and look at "candid travelers photos" on tripadvisor.com

There is pretty much no inventory on Hotwire at this time, so I doubt Priceline has anything either. The city will be jam-packed. A "reasonable" hotel rate, seems to be around $400 a night for a typical chain hotel (Courtyard, Residence Inn, etc.).

Unfortunately you have left it very late to find a hotel for Thanksgiving Week - not only is it possibly the most expensive week of the year, but many places (esp those at reasonable prices) are already sold out. Also - there simple aren't that many places to stay near her neighborhood - the vas majority are in midtown.

But, if you give us exact dates and a budget someone may be able to help with specific info.

Or, you could look at Embassy Suites downtown, in the financial district, (much less likely to be crowded over a weekend - but still may be due to the holiday).

I decided to check the Embassy Suites, which is available at $459 a night. Their Meadowlands location is $195 a night.

I put in date around thanksgiving in kayak.com and several optiosn camp up under $250 including several courtyard marriots, a Best Western and som esmaller hotels. Some are on the east side near the lexington avenue subway line which is a quick ride to Union Sq (14th St). Even the times Sq hotesl are near the N/R train which also goes to Union Square (which is a very short walk to the E. Village).

If the Courtyard Midtown East is on the available list, I'd go for it. The subway is at the corner, it's in the middle of everything, the room is large by NY standards (and I believe every room has a sofabed in addition to the bed....not that you need the extra bed, but it's nice to have the sofa in the room). Very pleasant staff and stay.

If you go on the marriott website, and use AAA discount, I think the rate is even better.

I put in dates for the entire week. I think the earlier party of the week (sun/mon/tue) before thanksgiving day are cheaper and the wed/thu/fri/sat are pricier. The < $250 is an average over the full week, so if it's just a few days around Thanksiging day, it may be more.

I am not sure what constitutes a regular hotel but Washington Square is not the only hotel in the area. As noted there is a Hojo, Off Soho, and new hotels on Rivington and Bowery.

There is also funky places called Second Home on Second, Jazz on the Town, and Union Square Hotel. They might not be to your liking but you can have your daughter check them out.

If you stay in the Meadowlands it will be cheaper but you will travelling a great deal.

I really wouldn;t reco the Meadowlands. Around Thanksgiving season - when there are gridlock alert days galore - you can figure at least an hour each way to get to the city - longer to your daughter's apartment.
