If there are two of you then take a taxi. The only thing cheaper will be finding someone who will offer you a free ride. The shuttles are fine for one, but about the same price as a taxi for two and take much longer to finally get you to your specific hotel.
Figure about $25 for the taxi.

If really wanted to save $),MTA's M60 bus runs between Manhattan & LGA ,also can transfer off M60 to N or W subway in to Manhattan. Suggest picking up a metro card.

Does anyone know anything about the new water ferry that is supposed to take people to LaGuardia?

Public transportation is easy. There are two city bus lines that stop at LGA. One connects you to Queens subways and the other to a Queens subway (Astoria line) or to subways in Manhattan along 125th St. and then to the Broadway line (nos. 1 & 9 trains) in front of Columbia University. So it all depends on where in Manhattan you want to go.

The ferry is in the planning stages. I believe that it will start next summer. I don't think its going to be any bargain.

Public transport (bus to bus or subway) is very inexpensive - but can also be interminable. (The husband of a friend of mine decided to take it to the airport to save money - although the rest of the family took a car service (don't even ask!). Even though he started almost 3 hours in advance he ended up missing the flight and they had to go ahead to florida without him. He had to pay beaucoup bucks to take another flight the next day.)

And this system is not designed for airport users - there are numerous sets of stairs and no place for luggage. So I don;t reco unless you have only a carryon you can hold on your lap.

IMHO for 2 or more taxi is the best choice.
