New York in December

Hello travel friends,
I am single boy from Nepal.I will be in travelling to US in mid December and will be in New York for 5 days. This will be first time in US. My host family lives in Kingston, NY which when I google showed me its located bit upstate NY. Travel duration to Kingston from JFK is around 2 hours. But I want to visit NYC, Therefore please suggest me what is best way to commute from Kingston to NYC. What are major things I can do or must experience in NYC this December? Any suggestion of transportation, places to see, activities and cheap and good stay and food are most welcome.
After NY, I want to go to Boston so suggest me what is cheap and best way to reach Boston.
Please help me make travel amazing experience.
Thank you all in advance.

There are 3 options from NYC to Boston: plane, train and bus. The bus is the most economical and is fairly comfortable, with Wifi, and often a (brief) food/bathroom stop (although the bus itself has a bathroom on board). A lot of students and young people travel this way, as well as older folks. The buses leave from outdoors in NYC, within walking distance of the subway. They arrive at South Station in Boston. Check Bolt bus and MegaBus sites for details.
Do realize that Boston is an extremely expensive city to stay in, with hostel dorm bunk beds reaching U$60/night in some seasons.

Oh, and the trip either by train or bus takes about 4 1/2 hours.

Although I haven't used them, I see you can take a Trailways bus from Kingston to NYC. The trip is about 2 hours, 10 minutes.

The closest Amtrak station to Kingston is Rhinecliff. But Amtrak is fairly expensive. I'd choose the bus if you need to save money. It will take longer but is half the price. Once in the city get around by subway for $2.75 a ride or walk.

Visiting NYC for the day from Kingston is really not a great idea. You will be spending 5 hours trekking to and fro on a bus in traffic for a limited amount of time actually seeing things in the city.

Do remember that in Dec you can get bad weather that will make the bus take much longer in each direction. Train may be more expensive but is more reliable unless the snow is very heavy.

If you want to stay several days in NYC in Dec I would chek the legitimate hostels for the best prices - try one of the Ys or perhaps the Hosteling International. I believe they all have small private rooms (but with shared bath) as well as dorms.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Tips and information has given me some insight. I will check around more. If anyone has any idea about cheap hostel in NYC, let me know. How much it would cost me?

Take a look at sites like hostelbookers.com or hostelworld.com and plug in your dates. For a dorm bed midweek next Tuesday I am seeing rates for about $45-50 and $100-150 for a private room (not all hostels have them).
