NEW YORK HOTELS UNDER $150???
Is it possible to find hotels in New York City (or even Brooklyn) for under $150? (My only requirement is that it be clean, safe, and I don't want to stay in a hostel) (I've already done a search on this forum, looked in a few guidebook and have come up empty handed).
Thanks

It is absolutely possible. If you're willing to use priceline or similar services you might end up with a room at a higher-end place. But even if you want to go the the traditional route, you can do it, especially if you're willing to forgo an elevator or to use a shared bathroom (though you don't have to do these things to stay under $150. Some place to look into include the Murray Hill Inn, the Carlton Arms, the Beacon, the Gershwin, and Radio City Apartments. These are all in safe area and have been recommended on this forum (or used by people I know). Of course, rates will always vary depending on time of year, what's happening in town, etc.

Thanks Caitlin.
I'll check those out.

Depending on what available rates are at the time of your trip, it is possible you could get a luxury hotel for under $150/night through Priceline. I host a forum to discuss bidding at http://pub4.ezboard.com/bpricelineandexpediabidding

Hotel Edison is in midtown, great location, clean, safe, and definitely has some rooms in your price range. I've stayed there many times. www.edisonhotel.com

I've also heard good things about the Habitat (I think that's what it's called) -- haven't stayed there myself but it's relatively new; some rooms have shared bath.

I've never paid more than $140-150 per night for a Hotel room in NYC and have in general been very satisified. I don't care for the Gershwin due to a bad experience there (related to customer service - not the quality of the room, although they lack A/C and that's a big minus in NYC summers!). have stayed at Radio City Apartments and it was the best value I've encountered in that price range. The suggestions of seeking a place where you'll share a bath is a good one. Typically, there are 4 - 6 rooms that each share a common bath that's in the hallway (the rooms have a washstand but no toilet or shower). Shared bath rooms will get you into the $75-85 per night bracket and good choices (so I'm told) include Murray Hill Inn, Habitat Hotel and Pickwick Arms. I stayed in such a room at Hotel 31 on 31st Street (just off Park Ave South in Murray Hill). It was nothing special but they always had rooms available when other hotels were sold out. Many of the rooms in this facility appear to be rented by permanent residents but the everything including common areas and the shared bath (which I never had to wait for, not even once)was spotlessly clean and there was 24 hour security at the desk with buzzer style controlled access. The rooms were a bit dark and I found that a bit sombre but otherwise it was great.

Check out www.express-res.com for great prices on NY hotels. The map shows you where they're located and you can even look at photos of each hotel including the guestrooms (and some bathrooms!). You can phone them directly or get price quotes in literally seconds via e-mail.

FYI, there is a great article in the brand new issue of Budget Travel magazine about New York hotels for under $100 per night -- I just saw it at a newsstand. It mentions some of the same hotels that have been mentioned here and also has some photos. I recommend you check it out. The Habitat Hotel is one they mention (great location by the way) -- the website is www.habitat-ny.com

Amy, Thanks for your response to my question of hotels around $150.00. I had already seen your question earlier before I posted mine. But, notice your question refers to Brooklyn and we want to stay in the Manhattan area. You might want to be sure to read the question thoroughly before responding. But, thanks again for your response. :) Pam
