New York Hotels - Do you have any strong recommendations?
 

Hi there,

I am currently looking at booking some hotels in New York for October this year. By all accounts, it is not cheap. Some of my travel books have indicated that a 'reasonable' hotel would cost about USD$200 to USD$300.

Could you recommend a hotel in this price category that you really liked? It would be great to hear your experience or why you rate it so highly.

Ben, the best I can do is suggest you check quikbook.com, a site I find has some very good prices for NYC hotels. If you want to post your actual dates I can have a look to see what would be available within your budget. Most people prefer staying in midtown. Are you traveling alone or with kids or??? Could make a difference in hotel/area to stay. Do you prefer big or small hotels? Would you prefer something more like an apartment? There are a number of hotels with apt. style rooms (more space and kitchens). The Blakely (on the west side within a walk to Times Square and Central Park) and the San Carlos on the eastside are 2 I'd consider. Do you know about tripadvisor.com for hotel reviews?

I should add travelzoo.com often has great "deals" featured but usually not until a month or 2 before your stay. You could book something now that's cancellable (most reservations booked through quikbook are cancellable) and watch for any deals closer to your stay.

Check Affinia.com. They have some very nice hotels in various midtown locations. Many are suites with kitchens. They usually have some special offers on their websites.

We had visitors stay at the Shelburne in '04. They booked through the website using 1 of the special offers. Some stayed in 1 bedrooms suites and others in studio suites. They all were very pleased with their accommodations.

If there are only 2 of you, you can probably get a good deal on a 4* wuth priceline.

The Park South Hotel in Murray Hill

The Manhattan Seaport Suites (The Exchange Hotel) Financial District

The Salisbury Hotel (Central Park South; I haven't stayed overnight here but visit often when my parents take an apartment here).

I love the Michelangelo and sometimes their internet offerings, either through their web page directly or other general hotel sites are a good deal for what you get at that hotel.

Although it can certainly be hard to find lower cost hotels in New York, I found that http://www.travelocation.com/new_york.html this page consistently had the lowest deals. I think right now there is one in Manhattan for ~$140. (Not bad at all)

You may also want to consider doing what I did and stay in Jersey City. It is much cheaper and only 15 mins outside of Manhattan. (Very easy cab ride to Manhattan) These hotels (which I found at the same url) were only about ~$70. Add that up over a few nights and you will save a bundle.

How much is a car from JC to mid-town Manhattan? No metered cabs in NJ, so must be a car service.

If you want to save some $$ by staying in NJ, stay at the Sheraton Suites in Loncoln Harbor. There's a daily ferry, takes 5 min to cross; on weekends or nights, a little van takes you to a ferry a few minutes away in Weehawken. Ferry is around $11 r/t. (Free) buses on NY side go across town on major streets (34/42/50/57 & downtown).

Don't stay in New Jersey if you want to visit Manhattan. Bad idea.

The OP is talking October. The only thing available in October for under $200 will be a hostel.

Try looking at www.hotels.com. Also the Hotel Grand Union will be around $200, and it is on East 32nd St, a good location for getting around the city.

That's exactly the reason I suggested LH. It's a very easy ride to NY for a minimal cost.

You have to take PATH to Hoboken to catch the train and the ferry doesn't run after midnight or on weekends.

I'll make my usual rec. that you check into the Affinia hotel group. Good, clean hotels in a variety of price ranges, and terrific service.

Checked their website for mid-Oct., most of their hotels are in the low-$300 range. You may want to re-consider either your timing or your price range -- fall is a very popular time to visit NYC.

There is no PATH station near Lincoln Harbor. The Weehawken ferry runs 7 days a week until 1 a.m. & the Sheraton Suites runs a bus between the hotel & ferry (a 3 minute ride).

I take the ferry every day & I know the drill.

If there are 2 of you you might try Priceline - but try now - often rates go much higher the closer you get to the date.

Affinia would be fine for you - but you won;t get them - or really any nicer places for less than $300.

Suggest you look at other websites listed here NOW to see if they have anything. I have looked at 1 or 2 places I might reco and they are either already sold out or in the $400 range (for what was $250 in April).

We're going to NYC next week and are staying at the Econo Lodge Times Square. It's located at W 47th and 8th Ave and I've read nothing but good reviews for it (great service and location, clean but small rooms, free bkfst). For end of June, we're paying $154 a night. I think you have to go to the Choice Hotels website to search for it.

I really like the Blakely, especially its location which is convenient to theatre, restaurants, shopping, Columbus Circle, etc. Another place I have enjoyed is the Sofitel which is more in the theatre district, I think on 44th or 45th.

John, you are so right! I had booked my trip through www.travelocation.com and they offer the lowest prices I had ever found! Their site is really well done and easy to navigate. Their Save Rate hotels are amazingly priced! They offer everything!

Try Priceline. I never used it before.
But I just got Grand Hyatt for 160.00 USD + tax for August 20-23 2006.
It's a 4 stars hotel. very great deal!
