Travelling to New York for four nights at end of March for 25th Wedding Anniversary. Want to see the main sights and shops. Any ideas on where we should stay.

What type of budget do you plan on for the hotel for the four nights including taxes? Give us a range and we'll be able to help you better

Travelling from Ireland so I don't know what the quality of hotels, apts, etc, are like in New York. We plan to only have a hotel as a base and somewhere to sleep. We will be out most of the time. Would hope to get somewhere comfortable within easy distance of main areas for less than $1000 including all taxes etc for the four nights. Of course, being Irish, I would like to get the best possible for the least possible price.

The "main sights" are scattered around town and so are the shops. Most people like to stay "midtown" (34 st - 59 st.) but there are many that prefer more residential areas. It's easy to get around on subway, bus and taxi.

Your budget amounts to about $210/night without tax (the way most prices are quoted on US websites).

On the Avenue is a nice, modern hotel on the upper west side (north of midtown). A room there for the last 4 nights in March is $209 plus tax.

The Beekman Tower hotel (near the United Nations) has a special "travel ticker promotion" for a studio suite good thru 3/31 for $159/night (plus tax). It's a nice hotel in an older deco building. This suite is like a one room apartment with a small kitchen and a sitting area.

This price can be found by going to Affinia.com, putting in your dates and selecting studio and "book it". That price won't show up on the price grid, but it does show up when you click "book it" as an option toward the middle of the page. It's is midtown, but not as centrally located as some others, but that rate is great. The hotel has a nice bar/restaurant at the top with nice views.

The Travel Inn is a decent budget hotel not far from Times Square and the theater district. This is the area most think of when they think of being in the middle of things. This is not what I'd think of as an anniversary type hotel, but it's clean, decent and well located and comes in just under your budget.

As always, excellent advice from McLaurie! The reson I asked you to include tax with your price is that if someone says they want to spend around $200-$225 per night they usually expereince sticker shocker when the NYC hotel taxes are added! Always best to know what you really want to spend ahead of time.

Very interesting suggestions. We will see what happens and I will let you know results. My "budget" is quite flexible so I may have to aim higher. (And I thought Dublin was expensive!!!) I was prepared to book Fitzpatrick's 56th. St or the one near Central Station at same price (857 Euro incl taxes - about $1200) for the four night but was told that it is over rated, too Irish and I could do better for less money.

And I agree with that advice. For some reason the end of March is expensive. You can usually find good deals for $179-199/night in winter, but for some reason, there aren't many for the end of that month. YOu may see some specials on travelzoo.com tomorrow and Wed. I THINK all the options I gave you are cancellable. (ofcourse double check if you want to book something and take a wait see approach).

If you're looking for a 4* hotel (not 5* deluxe) in the central park south/midtown area you'll probably have to go for something more like $400 per night including taxes. Just checked randon dates at the Sofitel and they have prepayable internet specials for about that range. (A 5* deluxe would be more in the $600 range.) This is just an example - if you tell us $ versus what you're looking for (since it's an Anniversary) people can provide other suggestions.

If you're willing to stay in the 3* range you should be able to get something pleasaant for around $250 including taxes.

Thanks everybody. After listening to all your valuable views perhaps we can meet where I have booked - Fitpatricks. I know I am a sad case, can't get away from the Paddy's but I believe it is a good location (or is it?).
