New York Hotel special Anniversary query

On the last week of November will have 5 full days in NY for a special Wedding Anniversary. Have never been, so would like a fabulous central location. Willing to spend money but not throw it away . We appreciate any advice..one friend mentioned The Plaza .....?

The recently renovated Plaza is a beautiful, grand, elegant hotel in a fantastic location.

If "old world" elegance, classic New York, is your cup o' tea, then the Plaza is the perfect choice.

csb115 , can you quantify into dollars "Willing to spend money but not throw it away "?
Hotels in NYC can be $150 (through Priceline, not busy dates)
or closer to $1000.
Seriously.
Also, a little more about you--approximate age, (special anniversary could be 1 year--or 50), style of hotel, modern or classic. Will you be in NYC over Thanksgiving (some good deals) or right after when rates go way up?. All weekday or partly weekend?

We are a "young" 55 celebrating 35 years together :).Will spend up to 850ish a night and like both modern and classic..Enjoy a cocktail and music..Dates are Nov 25-Dec 1 [over a weekend]

Mandarin Oriental. Great lobby for drinks with view. In the same building is Dizzy's Coca Cola for jazz. The NY Palace is another idea.

Mandarin Oriental
Four Seasons
St. Regis
Carlyle
Plaza-Athenee
The Pierre
The Plaza

Not in that order but my favorite has always been St. Regis.

That is a busy weekend with the Thanksgiving parade and the start of the holiday shopping.

Check travelzoo.com. There was a NYC hotel listed for aprx $239 per night, West 44 Street.

I hate to say it but you have picked avery busy and expensive time of year and %850 maynot get you the type of hotel you want unless you act quickly. The Plaza has some internet specials that are running about $900 per night incluidng taxes. I checked a couple of the other and they're running more in the range of $1100 per night including tax (about 18% in NYC).

I would go online now to see what you can find - make reservations and then decide which you would prefer - or you may be shut out of luxury in your price range.

I would suggest the Library Hotel-we stayed there and just loved it-don't know if it will be available the dates you want.

Thanks everyone. We got an excellent deal on a Rose Suite at the Plaza (on the Canadian Expedia site). Interestingly..the American site did not have the same price quote?? We saved $250 US a night. We will be sure having cocktails at the Mandarin, it looks to be in walking distance.Hmmm, now where to have that anniversary dinner...? Four Seasons, 21?

I'm not a big fan of the Four Seasons - I find the menu 'old' and extremely overpriced - it has always seemed more of a business crowd to me. There are much better restaurants in NY than 21. What type of food/atmosphere/budget are you interested in? When we celebrate our 30th this winter, I think we're starting at the Mandarin for cocktails too and heading elsewhere for dinner.

And Judyrem already has a thread going on NY restaurants for a special anniversary. You might find it useful. Click on her name to find it.

Agree with CPG that neither the Four Seasons or 21 are great enough. Here's the other thread referenced. http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...restaurant.cfm

IMHO 21 is really a place for businessmen. The food is OK, but tends to be heavy, but the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. And agree that Four Seasons is good but not very exciting.

If you give your budget and type of food/atmosphere (classic, romantic, trendy, pretty etc) people can make recos. For something in the same area Grenouille is charming and has great classic French.
