New York- Hotel Pennsylvania
Any reviews for Hotel Pennsylvania in NYC? The rates and location seem good, but I have not heard it mentioned often on this site. Just wondering...
Thanks! LSS |
definitely do not stay at the hotel pennsylvania, no matter what you do. the location is across the street from pennsylvania station in the west 30's.
|
Why do you say definitely do not stay there?
I was thinking of coming in on the Amtrak which is across the street, right? |
Yes, it's close to Penn Station, but otherwise that is a terrible location.
Stay elsewhere. |
It's a yucky neighborhood and a dreadful, rundown hotel. I'd advise you think about another option.
|
Not only shouldn't you stay there but I thought they were either tearing it down or renovating the building.

There are tons of reviews on TripAdvisor...
And, have a look at http://web.dailycamera.com/community...es/02pbar.html |
Here's just a couple of previous posts from Fodor's:
Author: wliwl Date: 04/21/2007, 08:14 pm It's too bad they couldn't just gut the Pennsylvania and still use it for a hotel. Anyway, once the demolition starts, brace yourself for the exodus of roaches and rodents. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Author: GoTravel Date: 04/21/2007, 09:02 pm Are you kidding? They'd have to bomb The Pennsylvania and start over. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's why it's suggested you stay elsewhere :) |
Thanks guys! That is what I was looking for. Any good options for another inexpensive hotel somewhat close to the Amtrak Station or any inexpensive Taxi away?

When are you coming to the city? Is there some reason you need to be near Penn Stations (perfectly safe, but dreary at night). And don't plan on cabs - subway is much cheaper and usually faster (unless you mean getting luggage to the hotel).
There are many dozens of hotels within a $10 cab ride of Penn Station. If you tell us why you're in the city people can make budget recos in the right areas. Have you looked at the applecore hotel group - several budget hotels with reasonable reviews (unlike the Pennsylvania, which is a complete dump). |
Dave Barry wrote a very funny column about the "Shpennsylvania" but I can't find the link. Here's a link to a New York Observer article entitled "Landmark Hotel Pennsylvania Needs Big Dose of Lysol" and let me tell you, they're not kidding. http://www.observer.com/node/52555
There's a LaQuinta and a Red Roof nearby - www.applecorehotels.com. |
HA! nytraveler, great minds....

There are aksi several supways right in Penn Station that can take you to many other hotels, primarily along the west side of Manhattan, which includes Times Sq, and Central Parks west, which are good tourist locations (I personally am not a fan of Times Sq, but it's much better than across frmo Penn Station, and may tourist like staying there).
There was a recent thread here about budget NYC hotels. If I can dig it up, I'll give the link. |

It's nice that everyone agrees on something.

The Red Roof Inn on W 32nd Street is the place for you. Very convenient, comfortable, clean, and economical.

Have stayed in Hotel PA twice; probably will not again. Price both times was great, but service and cleanliness were definite issues. Location is great for MSG, but otherwise not good at all after dark -- not much going on.
My first visit there coincided with the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, and I think all the pooches were staying at the Hotel PA -- the lobby resembled a giant kennel. So if you travel with a pet, maybe it's worth considering. Otherwise, as others have said, many better options exist. |
