New York Hotel Dilemma

Want to stay with spouse in NYC for two or three days. Last summer, we stayed at the London and had a great time. This summer we are thinking of the Sherry-Netherland or the Peninsula Hotel? Which do you suggest or do you have other suggestions? We want something sophisticated and romantic.

For what you're looking for I would suggest the St. Regis. or the Ritz Carlton Central Park.

The prices for St. Regis and Ritz Carlton are a little over the top. Thanks for the suggestion, however.

How much did you want to spend a night?

I would spend up to around $550.00. The Peninsula and Sherry-Netherland have rates in that area. I was also told the Hotel Benjamin was good.

We were in New York a couple of years ago and stayed at the Library Hotel for four nights. It is in a great location-midtown-for walking around and right near Grand Central Station for places farther away. Breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese are included in the price.

The Sherry is a grand dame of a hotel. Old Money. Preppy. Mayflower descendents.

The Peninsula is modern and sleek. New Money. Glamour. Hollywood.

Which would you prefer?

PS
MY sister's best friend's parents live in the penthouse of the S-N.

"The Peninsula is modern and sleek."

Have they redone it? It's been a few years now, but when we stayed there the decor was very "old world elegance". A couple pieces of furniture including a console in our entry looked right out of Versailles!

It might be over your price range, but I'd suggest you take a look at the Mandarin Oriental. I do love that hotel.

It was refurbished in 98 Patrick. Right now they renovating the top 3 floors which includes the pool, roof top bar and spa.

The Mandarin is more Doug as I've stayed there twice.

My wife suggested the New York Palace.

>Modern and sleek<

A poor choice of words. Really meant "new" and "ersatz"-- furniture that looks like it just came out of the showroom. High glossy stuff that is brand new but is in the Louis Quatorze style. Not old and lived-in like at the Sherry.

I'd second The Palace as a great suggestion. It was completely redone a few years ago, and it is really beautiful. The rooms are lovely and large/comfortable with big luxury bathrooms.

Have a great trip.

We stayed at the Benjamin last fall and loved it. Great location at 50th/ Lexington near two subway lines. And in your price range also. A little quieter there vs. being in Midtown west. :-)

I simply love the Sherry-Netherland!

Location is perfect and I always feel like I'm in a Doris Day Career Girl NYC movie when I walk in the doors.

Don't get me wrong, The Penninsula is very very nice I just have a soft spot for the old greats like St.Regis, The Plaza, WA, The Carlyle, etc.

Doug, in my experience I've found the MO to be about 30% more than the other top end luxury Manhattan hotels.

I don't think the Benjamin is in the same league as the Peninsula or the Sherry.Nor do I think the Palace is either. the London, as you know, is wonderful, but very modern and sleek. I would go with the peninsula.

NeoPatrick Aug 1st, 2008 05:03 AM

emcash, according to the above posts, since the refurbishing, the Peninsula is now very modern and sleek too!

Not what you are asking, but the bar at the Library Hotel (I think it is the Book Bar) is worth a visit - great rooftop cocktails. Expensive, but you are paying for the location as much as the drinks. Totally worth it.

I've only held meetings at the Palace, but I've never heard anything but positives about staying there.

The OP mentioned the Benjamin, which is why I added my experience there.
