New York for long weekend
 

want to take 2 kids 8/11 to NYC for long weekend in Oct- we like 5 star accommodations....any suggestions where to stay that is not old and stuffy in a hip/busy/interesting area? Walking distance to restaraunts, shops, etc?

Union Square W is in an interesting (and also kid-friendly) area as you describe. Also near subway hub to get just about anywhere else.

The upper west side, near Central Park and Museum of Natural History would also be good (I'm not familiar with hotels up there).

I don't think the Peninsula is old or stuffy. Your kids will love the indoor pool that has a view of 5th Avenue.

The location at 5th and 55th provides nice access by foot to the museums, Times Square and Central Park. Numerous well known stores are nearby.

Given Manhattan isn't that big, access via the subway or taxi to Soho and the Meatpacking district are fairly easy. The latter is great in terms of nightlife, which is less of a concern with two kids.

5 star of course can mean different things to different people. I would expect that at a minimum a room with an interior view at the Peninsula will run about $800 per night.

If you're looking to stay further downtown in the hip part of town, then I might suggest the Hotel Gansevoort. If you're looking for a Central Park view, the Mandarin sits at the Columbus Circle corner of Central Park.

The Standard Hotel might be fun for the kids as it straddles The Highline.

If you are coming the weekend after Columbus Day you all can enjoy Open House New York. It is usually Columbus Day weekend but this year, the Jewish Holiday Yom Kipper falls on that weekend. Here's my post from last year (There are always great kids events)

NYC is a great place to be and so many things to do and see. Check out the W-hotels at Times Square or on Lexington Ave. Ganseworth hotel in Meatpacking Distrcit is also nice :-)
