New York Embassy Suites/locationn
 

I have looked at two places for myself and two teen agers. ONe is a bed and breakfast with a good location, breakfast and private terrace and the other is Embassy Suites which is by Ground Zero. Similar price
Should I go with the more convenient location or go for the one with more space.

Ho long is the trip. For a night or two I don't think space matters that much. If the trip is much longer I think having more room males for a much more comfortable stay.

WE will be going for four or five nights. The bed and breakfast has a kitchen, queen size bed, and futon. The Embassy Suites has two doubles and pull out couch.

The Embassy Suites includes a full cooked breakfast with room rate and there's a movie theater in the building which teens may like. ES is close to the Hudson River so nice and cool in summer and near a stop of the nywatertaxi.com on weekends. If it's a summer trip, I think ES is great and bed arrangement will be more comfortable. If it's during the winter, I think it depends on your plans while in NYC.

Coincidently I AM AT THE ES right now. I have been facilitating meetings in the Financial District and have a pleasure to have been staying here - it's my 2nd trip this month and I highly recommend the hotel.

Ask for a room that faces Washington - they seem to be a little bigger and you can get a nice view outside.

The b'fast and afternoon snacks are great. There is also a Chevy's Mexican restaurant downstairs and a deli - which might be nice for your teen's.

My choice would be the Embassy Suites. I love the location!

WE made a reservation at the Embassy Suites. I am hoping that it will be convenient enough to do Time Square and teenage shopping. I know that we are a bit out of the way. I went with the price and the amount of room versus location. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

You are defiantely a cab ride from Manhatten but you will have plenty to keep you busy at the ES location. Century 21 is a 10 minute walk - great place to shop!

A cab ride from Manhattan? You mean a cab ride from Midtown, right?

ES is a good location for exploring downtown MANHATTAN - South Ferry/Tribeca/Chinatown are all easily reachable by walking, bus, subway or cab. Your teens should check out the music during the River to River festival, which takes place along the Hudson all summer long. Last year Spoon (they'll recognize the name, even if you don't) gave a free outdoor concert about 2 blocks north of the Embassy Suites. Check out the offerings at:

Canal street shopping is an easy 10 - 15 minute walk. Also you could take the uptown #1 train from Chambers Street to Sheridan Square and you'll be smack dab in the middle of Greenwich Village. Your teens will like exploring the shops there, then walk east to Broadway. They can look at the cluster of NYU buildings, soak up the summer college atmosphere, then walk down Broadway and shop the stores there.

Oh yeah...Embassy Suites is nice and you can walk to several interesting places. To go to Times Square, it can run up some taxi fares, so it depends on how many times you are heading that way. Also, EB should be able to tell you the closest metro station.
Have you ever done the double-decker bus tour? That is nice and there is a pick up location within walking distance of EB.
I am not sure about your teens, but mine like the idea of a pool at night...which Embassy has. Also, as mentioned the breakfast includes made to order and it is fabulous.

What is the alternative to getting to Time Square instead of taxi. Anyone have directions for what subway to take? Is it okay to take late at night, 11 or midnight back to EB suites? Now that I have this nailed down, I am going to start planning the activities.

Closest subway stop to Embassy Suites is the E train World Trade Center stop--very good for getting to and from Times Square. Two blocks further is the Fulton St station, where many, many train lines overlap.

The train should be fine at those hours. When you get off at WTC at midnight, the streets will be empty, but safe.

It's very easy - walk east across Vesey street (straight away from the Hudson River) to the World Trade Center/Park Place subway station - about an 8 minute walk. Take the 2 or 3 train to Times Square (42nd St. and 7th Avenue) or the A or E train to 42nd and 8th Avenue. door to door should be about 20 minutes, depending on the time of day - fewer trains run in off peak hours.

weekend subway travel in Manhattan is usually complicated by construction re-routing so check the signs as you enter the station or even better, check that mta site for weekend travel advisories.

twbuss, we were very happy with the Embassy Suites you have reserved. Our family of four spent three nights there one October, and explored all of Manhattan from there, on foot, by subway, and by taxi. The breakfast is a great start to your day, and it's nice to have all that space.

That Embassy Suites is in an excellent location and a quick train ride can get you uptown.

I'd much rather stay downtown than Midtown and I find more to do in that area than Midtown.

Museums, Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, City Hall, St. Paul's Chapel, Trinity Church, Federal Buidling, New York Stock Exchange, fantastic architecture, fantastic dining and shopping, tall ships, South Street Seaport,Battery Park, Castle Clinton, etc.

Thanks for all the great information...I feel like I have made the right choice for hotels...especially since I found it for around $270 a night (Triple A rate). Everything was much higher and less space.

Where did you find that AAA rate? I'm not seeing it on the ES website.

Also on their website, there is no mention of pool. We were hoping for that. Am I incorrect? If not, does anyone know of a nice pool area at a hotel in a good location?

I called to make reservations and I asked what their AAA rate was. I also booked the King Suite, The double, double is about $50 more per night.
I have no knowledge of a pool....but if you call and find out, let me know.

The Millenium Hilton Hotel has a beautiful indoor rooftop pool - it is just a few blocks away from the Embassy Suites. I've stayed there, pre- 9/11/01 - it is a very nice hotel.

If you don't like the rates there, you can always buy a weekend day pass to the beautiful pool at the famous Stuyvesant High School, which is 2 blocks north of the ES. That's a nice 25 yard pool open to the community on the weekends. There is also a local health club a bit south of the ES that has a small pool that might offer day passes, too. You could call the hotel and ask.

OOPs...when I was thinking of the pool I was thinking of another EB we stayed at in NJ. We did stay at the EB-NY, but it was a very cold period in March and we did not go to the pool...Sorry for the misinformation.
