Just my 2 cents, but I didn't find anything nasty in marginal's post.

Hairspray is a fun musical and you can get discount tickets for it. I agree that Spamalot would be a big hit if, like my girls, the boys like Monty Python.

There's a new musical opening called Curtains with David Hyde Pierce. Just got an email for discounts on telecharge.com using the code CUTCE85
Details here

Well, I’m going to get tickets for Curtains – thanks for that tip!

Are you completely against Phantom of the Opera? It doesn’t get showier than that and if cost is a factor you can get huge discounts. I think it would be a much better choice than Lion King. The music is good and there are great special effects. But if you have to choose between that and a Yankee game – definitely the Yankees!

While I loved Curtains (saw it in LA this summer and it is wonderful) -- I'm not sure that most teen boys would like it nearly so well as many of the other things mentioned -- particularly Spamalot, Altar Boys, or even Hairspray. It is more a spoof of big musicals and has a lot of more "insider" musical jokes -- much like Drowsey Chaperone.

Well, I have already bought the tickets for Altar Boyz, and I think it will be awesome! As I am thinking this all through, and trying to keep somewhat of a budget (ha!), I may try for discount tickets for a second night for Spamalot. This would not be my first choice (2 1/2 hours of Monty Python humor, hmmm) but I know it will have major appeal factor for the teen boys, as well as husband! They think Monty Python and the Holy Grail is hilarious! I'll look into Broadwaybox as we get closer, or the TKTS booth. I think that even though it is a weeknight, it also is Easter week with a LOT of families on vacation, like me!

Virginiatraveler, I think a lot of woman are surprised that they enjoy Spamalot. I loved it, though I am a Monty Python fan. But aside from the Python humor, there is still plenty of singing and dancing for all to enjoy!

Thanks TarheelsInNj! I will try to find tickets to Spamalot at a discount, either ahead of the trip online or at TKTS booth. This Fodors sight is a wealth of knowledge!

I really think that the only Broadway musical to take teens to would be "Avenue Q" All of my teenage nephews and nieces are nuts for this musical. It's very "in." Actually, I'm not sure why... I don't get the whole puppet thing. I don't think it's for a really conservative family, however. Another favorite of teens seems to be Wicked. Neither of these is new, but they are the ones I hear kids talking about.
-k.

I'm really curious. Were you serious about that comment, kawh? I'd have a hard time finding a Broadway musical NOT to take teens to, and you think there is only one?
Surely you were kidding?

Wow. I keep forgetting that when you post in print people often read smiling overstatements as factual edicts. My impression was that virginiatraveler was looking for ONE musical or play for the teens. I was just suggesting the musical that, for some reason, my teen relatives and their friends(LA & Seattle) all seem to be turned on by. But thanks for the censure. I do need to remember not to overstate. -k.
