New York City Trip Report - 3/26-29/2010

Trip report – Just following up to my post last week regarding our upcoming trip to NYC. My friend and I had a great time. Here’s what we ended up doing. It’s quite food & shopping oriented. If we’d had more time we would have hit more museums and spent a good amount of time enjoying Central park and perhaps Brooklyn. It rained so wasn’t so great for outdoor stuff.

Fri (in late afternoon)
Duane St. Hotel in Tribeca –very clean, quiet, great staff. Next time we’d probably go further North to be closer to some attractions but we were happy with our rate and the hotel. http://www.duanestreethotel.com/ Walked to Brooklyn Bridge and had dinner at The Bridge Café – really good, nice atmosphere. http://bridgecafenyc.com/ Mussels were great.

Sat - Our shopping day – hit Nolita, Soho and Tribeca. Had brunch at Emporio – very tasty, cute spot. http://www.auroraristorante.com/Emporio%20Home.html
Dinner at Pipa – was perfect pre-theater because it’s tapas and we could eat light. http://www.pipa-nyc.com/
Cort Theater – “A View from the Bridge” – great.
Back to Tribeca for drinks at Blaue Glans http://kg-ny.com/ - cool spot, great atmosphere, right across from hotel.

Sun - Tried to get into Clinton Street Baking Co. but 2 hour wait at 11am so ended up at a great spot called Back Forty – good, simple brunch www.backfortynyc.com
Wandered our way toward the museums, stopped at Momofuku Milk for dessert – red velvet soft serve and “Crack” pie. Not that great. Young crowd, wouldn’t return
Frick Museum – beautiful. They had a classical music concert at 5pm that we had tickets for, admission to museum at 4pm included. A great way to end the afternoon. www.frick.org
Dinner at Gramercy Tavern – prix fixe menu for $86 – we thought it was worth it. Fun atmosphere for a Sunday evening. http://www.gramercytavern.com/

Mon - Up early – stopped at Grandaisy Bakery http://www.grandaisybakery.com/ for bread and a latte (SO GOOD) on our way to the High Line. LOVED the High Line http://www.thehighline.org/ It’s such a good way to incorporate old, new, nature, etc.
Meandered around Chelsea Market, the West Village – nice boutiques.
Lunch at The Little Owl – a very quaint spot, good service and food (had arugula salad with duck) http://www.thelittleowlnyc.com/

Nice report! Thanks for providing some details on places in Tribeca, sounds like you had a great time!

Any memorable shops from Saturday's shopping expedition?

Bit of trivia: The building that The Little Owl is in was used for the outside shots of the apartment building on the TV show "Friends"

Hi Margo - We did learn that bit of trivia re: The Little Owl because walking tours kept going by while we had lunch. There's also a wood frame house across the street that's supposedly one of the oldest in the city?

Some shops we found/liked

Nolita
Baby Blue Line - nice knit t-shirts, I found a cute knit tunic top, helpful sales people http://www.yelp.com/biz/baby-blue-line-new-york

High Way - great bags http://www.highwaybuzz.com/

Soho
Flying A - funky stuff, wide range of prices http://www.flyinganyc.com/

My friend is more of a serious shopper and found items at Theory in the Meatpacking district http://www.theory.com/stores/stores,default,sc.html

and in West Village (I think that's the neighborhood)
MZ Wallace http://www.mzwallace.com/

Rag and Bone http://www.rag-bone.com/
