New York City trip report 12/18-12/21
Returned last week from three nights in NYC with my husband. We had a great time. We stayed at The Roosevelt Hotel which I got on travelzoo.com for $179 a night. It was a wonderful hotel in a perfect location. We were upgraded from a queen to a king room. The room was really good sized - much bigger than I was expecting. Since we were celebrating our anniversary, they gave us a complimentary breakfast one morning. It was a breakfast buffet which was very good. The normal cost is $27.95 - a little high for breakfast! The other two mornings we were there I ran out to a street vendor and grabbed coffee and bagels.
We went on a Big Apple Greeter's Tour which was really good. If you Google them, you will find information. If they have a guide available for you, it's a free tour of different parts of the city or you can put "greeter's choice" and they take you where they want. I really wanted to see Brooklyn so that's where we went. Of course, we only saw a very small portion. The greeter met us at our hotel and then we took the subway to Brooklyn. She pointed out a lot of different things to us walking, as well as on the subway - like at the different subway stops, the tile artwork on the walls. In Brooklyn we looked out across the water to Governor's Island, Statue of Liberty, etc. We walked and heard all about DUMBO. Our whole tour was about four hours long. There is no charge for the tour but we did buy her lunch at a small deli. After leaving the greeter we walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, which is something that I really wanted to do. We then went to Ground Zero and walked around that area for a little while.
On Thursday we did a Foods of New York Tour of Greenwich Village. This was a lot of fun. The cost was $40 per person, but we went to I think seven different stores and had tastings of all different things. We heard a lot of history of Greenwich Village. It was a wonderful tour and we would definitely do another tour. In fact, we will be doing a North End Tour in Boston in the spring. It was a wonderful day. You get enough food samplings on the tour to not need lunch! After the tour we walked around the village a little more and then took the subway up to Central Park. We went to the Christmas Markets in Bryant Park, Grand Central Station, and Central Park. We walked around Central Park a little and then headed to the Parker Meridien to the Burger Joint, which I heard about on this site. The Burger Joint was unique, that's for sure! Very good burgers and fries. We left there and walked to Rockefeller Center and checked out that whole area before heading back to the hotel. We saw a show one night - Is He Dead? written by Mark Twain. Very funny comedy that we really enjoyed. We also went to HA Comedy Club. I had printed off $5 cover charge coupons from their website. They had a two item minimum per person, so we had coffee and dessert as our minimums. It still worked out a little cheaper than paying the regular $18 cover charge.
We had a great time in NYC. We are looking forward to going back to NYC soon. The weather was great except for a little rain on Wednesday night.

Always interested to read New York City trip reports the home of our son and daughter-in-law.
The Big Apple Greeter's Tour sounds wonderful. You can't beat walking over the Brooklyn Bridge back into the city on a clear day. You were lucky with the weather.
Thanks for posting your report.

A few people told us we were crazy for wanting to walk the Brooklyn Bridge in December but we're glad we did it. There were a lot of people on the bridge. It's one of those things to cross off my to-do list.

Wow, you walked the Beidge in December.
I walked it a couple of years ago at the end of November (warm) and found it cold.
I did it again in mid-Sept this year and it was great.
Thanks for the report.
