New York City steakhouse
 

I will be in NYC for one day next month, I have Crown tickets for the Statue of Liberty at noon the day I arrive. Once I've finished sightseeing at Lady Liberty I'd like to have an early steak dinner if I have the energy and jet lag hasn't go the better of me in Manhattan. I fly out the next morning. Any steakhouses that Fodorites can recommend preferably in downtown or midtown.

How early do you want your steak dinner? Most places won;t serve before 6 pm! I think the classic is Peter Luger - but you probably won't want to go to Brooklyn. In Manhattan my Beau likes BLT Steak (I'm don;t really love giant chunks of meat).

There are quite a few good steakhouses downtown in the financial district near the ferry. http://www.menupages.com/restaurants...sort/Rating-1/ Surprisingly, most of them seem to serve straight through the day without closing between lunch and dinner. They're all very pricey though. For a less expensive option, any French bistro/brasserie will have good steak. In Soho, Balthazar is one option.

I haven't been there myself, but a relative loves Frankie and Johnnie's, and apparently they will give you a limo ride to and from your hotel.....

Thanks for all the replies. I will check the opening hours of the Steakhouses mentioned in this thread and keep the information handy on my visit to NYC.

Balthazar is a great option. One of my favorite restaurants, but NOT an inexpensive alternative by any stretch. dinner with an appetizer, a drink or two and a shared dessert will put you in the $200 range easily. Just don't want RJames to think that it's a lower cost alternative. Well worth the money, but not a cheap night.

Go to New York magazine, choose restaurants from the header, choose neighborhood you want, critics picks and steakhouse and you will have a list of 25 great NYC steakhouses. For perfect steak and wonderful character no one mentioned Keens. Where a waiter is still a waiter and not an actor making ends meet. Not cheap, but a great upscale steakhouse feel. It's been there since 1885 so they must be doing something right. Check the website.

We had breakfast at Balthazar yesterday. $70.00 before tip for an omelet, crepes, and two cups of coffee. Give me a break. I would Not put this restaurant in the same league as Keen's, Lugers', Old Homestead, etc.

For old school steak, head to the Financial District and enjoy Delmonico's, the original NYC steakhouse.

To enjoy what Argentina is also famous for, head to Buenos Aires. 513 E 6th Street, (between A and B Aves.)

Balthazar has a wonderful, although curiosuly cramped, bakery. The accolades for the restaurant, however, are undeserved. It is a fine bistro but not extraordianry, even if their prices are.

I completely agree, Aduchamp. We won't be going back to Balthazar.

I do want to add though, service was wonderful at Balthazar. The waitstaff were great.

Bowsprit - wasn't comparing breakfasts or I would have agreed that they are overpriced in that department. They asked about steak. Have had their steak frites twice and it was delicious both times. $34. Keens - comparable $44. So I think it's a good option if they are in Soho vs midtown. They asked about steak and no one had mentioned either Balthazar or Keens so I chimed in. Sorry you had such a bad experience...

I'm a fan of Dylan Prime in TriBeCa. It opens at 5:30 for dinner.

Smith & Wollensky, Old Homestead and Peter Luger are all great.
