Backpacks should be stored at your hotel. Almost all hotels take your luggage after check-out and hold it until you are ready to move on, though you might have to pay at some hotels. There is also a luggage storage place near Herald Square, but it's not that close to Rock Center. I don't know of any lockers anywhere in the area, though there may be storage cubbies for shoes and bags for people skating in the Rock Center ice rink ... though only for the time they are skating.

It's probably easiest to have the hotel store your luggage until you're ready to leave - unless you are going by Amtrak. If you have train tickets for that day you can store luggage in the Amtrak section of the station - but not without tickets. And for security reasons there are really no places in the whole city to store luggage except the noted schwartz travel.
Also, you should know that the NBC tour gets generally poor reviews - unless there is something very specific you want to see (you don;t get to see any live shows).
Across Fifth Ave from Rock Center have a look at St Pat's - gorgeous - and the windows of Saks - one block downtown.
Without knowing how much time you have - when you are arriving the first day and leaving the second - it;s hard to make other recos.
MoMA is also in the vicinity if you are interested and have time.

In case you did not know there is a whole "underground world" right BELOW Rock Center.
Good place for food, drinks and warmth for those cold windy days.
Take one of those glass elevators next to the rink, or if that is too crowded, enter the bldg oposite the tree and take the down escalators
Do not wander too far or you might get lost!

Mr.Leroy Jones III will gladly store your bags. You will often find him on 47st peddling knock-off DG purses, DVDs which he recorded with a video camera in the theater, watches, etc. He speaks with a Jamaican accent, and has long rasta hair. Fee is $5 if you return, $10 if you dont.
