New York City New Year's Eve 2010-family fun?

We are two families with teens and we are planning to celebrate New Year's Eve in Manhattan. We do not want to be anywhere near Times Square and would like to see the fireworks in Central Park. We are staying near Lincoln Square. We would like something low cost or free. Help! Thanks!

Not sure what you mean low cost or free. that's what the run and fireworks in Central park are. I assume you don;t mean a free dinner. You can ride the Staten Island ferry (and get a great view of the skyline on the way back) for free - but will likely freeze you butt off.

If you check out the website of New York Magazine it will list all sort of activities by date and type - and perhaps help you find something. But given the possible weather (it may be 45 or it may be 20 with wind and snow) not sure how much time you will want to spend outside that night.

How about a concert? St. John the Divine holds a Concert for Peace each year, tickets are free and the concert is held in the Cathedral which is the largest gothic cathedral in the world. 110th and Amsterdam. For the last 15 years The New York Festival Singers have been a part of that concert but we were told our services are no longer needed (kind of poorly done), so we are taking our concert on the road.

THIS YEAR The New York Festival Singers will be presenting a concert at St. Paul's (60th and Amsterdam), full orchestra and concert chorus of 150 singers. We will be singing Beethoven's 9th.

The concert will start at 7pm and we are out by 9 so you can get to dinner or fireworks to continue celebrating the evening. Tickets are not necessary and you are welcome to give a donation at the door. This cathedral is one of the oldest in the city and really beautiful.

If you are intesested please let me know and maybe we can get together after the concert for a dinner close by.

I think Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park is open until 11PM.
