guys I'm not trying to withhold info I just didn't think it mattered. The prices in all the hotels go up accordingly to the season and time of year ,correct?if the Jane or the pod are most reasonable off season....wouldn't it be true to assume they are still the most reasonable hotel during peak season? I mean if their prices go up 50 percent in peak season and the hyatt goes up 50 percent in peak season aren't they still the best price for that time of year. it's true I don't travel to New York often but I just assumed the most reasonable hotel that you could suggest would be the most reasonable hotel regardless of the time of year. they want to come the second week in Decemberu

No - it really doesn;t work that way.

All hotels wil go up in high season - but not neccessarily by the same percentage. Also - some hotels have speical offiers - even in high season - and those closest to the seasonal sights (mostl midtown) are likely to increase by more than those in other parts of the city.

If people here are asking for more info we are not beinng nosy we are trying to help. And very often people's assumptions are not correct.

nytraveler - thanks for the clarification. I have also stayed on the upper west side (right behind the Museum of Natural History) and the upper east side. I'd stay on the upper west again, but only if it were about the same price as the Jane. But I have no interest in Times Square.

clifbob, your position is not unreasonable. All hotels will not rise by the same percentage, and it really is necessary to give a specific per night budget, but: the main reason posters here want specific dates is so they can plug those dates into various hotel websites and then return here with the results. Don't ask me why they want to do what you could do yourself, I have never understood it.

IMO, a poster needs to give a budget and approximate dates--as the OP did, "second week in December"-- to get the best advice possible.

I wouldn't count on any place else have the same prices as the Jane - certainly not any of the pleasant hotels on the UWS (perhaps one of the dumps - but don;t think you want peeling wallpaper and dirty furnishings).

The Newton, a reliable budget property on the UWS, has rooms with 1 queen bed starting at about $260 a night that week. Others, like the Beacon, On the Ave and the Lucerne will be more.

2nd week of December usually has some good hotel discounts. I stayed at the Palace one year for 149.00 that usually gets 650.00 a night at other times. Another year, that same hotel was about 400.00 a night for the same dates.

Anyway, go look at all the travel sites. I like quikbook's secret sale hotels for discounts.

I would check Jetsetter as well. Usually higher priced properties, but good deals can be found.

I recently stayed at Radio City Apartments. It is in a good mid-town location and moderately priced.

Radio City probably already booked for that week and can't imagine the prices will still be high. Yes, a queen bed room for 2 people will be about $325 per night for that week,

A deluxe queen room at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in TriBeCa is $242 a night that 2 nd week of December. They are currently having a promotion, stay 3nights or more , including those Dec dates , and get 20% off total stay. That $242 is that. Prom rate. But book quickly, their great deals like this sell out fast. I really like that hotel and location, the 1 subway line runs next to the hotel, it is clean and friendly with restaurant and lots of places to eat with a few blocks.

nyt, when will you stop giving incorrect information about NYC hotel rates? You have been proven wrong many times over, and yet you keep posting inflated--imaginary--hotel rates. Enough already!

i have been staying in NYC hotels at all times of the year, many times a year, for about 25 yrs. I think that generally, the $325 rate is for a queen bed in mid- Dec is about right. The info I gave is a promotional rate, not a usual rate and it will not last long. I just happen to know aout it because I get emails from that hotel when they have promotional rates like that one. There are generally few really good deals like that promo rate at that time in Dec.

Sorry - but those rates are listed on the hotels websites- they are not fantasies. And I haven't seen any sites that have them for less. If you can find better rates for those hotels - please let us all know where to find them.

I'm not saying there aren't hotels for less - as above the Jane rooms with shared baths are significantly less.

The Jetsetter site that you keep recommending lists only 3 hotels at similar or lower rates than I listed - one near LGA and the other two in Brooklyn. There are a total of 3 hotels in Manhattan between $300 and $350 per night listed - nothing for less.)

So - if you know of good hotels for lower rates - please provide specifics not just a web site with nothing useful on it.

OK - I simply don't get it. You are a long time Fodorite and know, or should, that in order to hep, folks need info. I have no idea why you are reluctant to tell us what you think is 'reasonable' but you must have your reasons.

Jetsetter can be great WHEN they have a Flash Sale or similar sale. Their normal rates are no different than any other site and their selection is sparse. I have gotten some good deals there and have used it as a basis for getting lower rates directly with a hotel that employs a "Best Rate Guarantee".

All discount sites are worth looking at. And a few hotels may have special offers during that week.

But one has to look into all of them - and recognize that some have very loose definitions of location - and others that list hotels not for tourists (but rent by the hour or are used to temporarily house homeless families).

There are a couple of hotels in Brooklyn near Manhattan that are not too inconvenient - but I'm not sure they are much cheaper. the cheapest places in Brooklyn are typically a long trek from Manhattan.

Long Island City is an option - and checking Country Inn and Suites for one shows rates starting at about $150 per night for a queen room with no view. This is handy to the subway and only about 15 minutes to Manhattan. But it is a mixed use area (warehouses and auto bodyshops mixed with budget motels) and there are very few services (restaurants of shops).

If the budget matters that much this may be a reasonable compromise.
