New York City Hotel
 

I have been helping my son (late 20's) and his friend find a hotel to stay in in mid september. They don't want to spend more than $200 a night. There really isn't much available that seems to be that price AND have good reviews. Believe me, I have looked.

Actually, they did make a reservation at the SoHotel, but those reviews looked horrid. Any comments on that place?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

They should have no problem getting a 4* hotel for about $150 via Priceline.

Assuming they have no problem sharing a bed (many NYC hotel rooms have one double or queen bed) they will probably do best bidding on Priceline - but they need to learn how to do it - since one you bid you pay - no matter what you get. They could also look at travelzoo.com for their dates to see if there are any specials.

On the Ave - a very pleasant hotel on the upper west side is having an internet fall special for $199 per night - but with tax that will come to about $235 a night. It might be worth checking the web sites of some moderate hotels to see who is offering internet specials.

You can also check quickbook.com as they often have good discounts.

I plugged in September 18-20 on the site of The Fitzpatrick Gtand Central with no discount code and found both king-bedded and queen-bedded rooms for $199. Of course, don't forget to add on the tax...

My friend found this hotel on a travelzoo.com promotion during the winter for $149. and we consider it a great discovery! A very pleasant hotel on East 44th Street just across the street from Grand Central--

I did not find listings in the city on travelzoo.com that extend into September. You might try checking that site from time to time.

Try easyclicktravel.com I just booked the Algonquin for next week for $133/night ($158 with tax & fees) for 4 nights. Haven't looked for your dates, but this was a good alternative for us as were weren't getting a hotel in the area we wanted by bidding on Priceline.

Meant to add: be sure to read the terms of booking if you use easyclicktravel.com For the hotel we booked there is a slight penalty for canceling in advance and a steep fee if you cancel close to your check in date. It worked for us but might not for you if you want to continue to shop around.

Prices are low now, but they go up after Labor Day because that is the start of high season. It's exactly the same as in other big cities. If you can get the Fitzpatrick Grand Central, jump on it. It's a nice hotel. But you are looking for a very low price for this time of the year. I think Priceline is your best bet.

Did you try the Pod Hotel? If they take a twin-bedded room, they could probably get that for under $200. If they are willing to share a bath, then the Vanderbilt YMCA is an option. There are a few others, but $200 is very low for Manhattan in the fall.

Milburnhotel.com is less than $200 but sold out for Sept. 12th if that's one of their dates. The Travel Inn is another option.

If they're willing to stay in a room without private bath there are a lot of decent options in addition to the Pod that Doug mentions. The Westside YMCA is very well located and has private rooms with shared bath. They'd also get the use of the gym/pool at the Y. The Vanderbilt Y is also a decent option. There is also the Jane Hotel, again a shared bath situation. Very small rooms, but prices start at $79 in September. I haven't stayed there so I can't give a firsthand recommendation but here is the website: www.thejanenyc.com

Honestly, the rooms are small. This hotel is perfect is you just want to find a place to sleep. So, for active tourists it's fine. Now, for such a price, i don't understand why they did not get a 4 star hotel.
Why don't you contact conciergeriedeluxe.com so they can make reservation and negotiate free upgrade for you?

And why don't you stop advertising?
