I've only been to Motorino once, but we went around 6pm and had no wait at all. I know that most people are just finishing lunch at that hour (!) but it works well for me when I want to get in to a place that will be mobbed later on.

MP: I am hoping if I get to Fatty Cue around 6pm, I can get right in...(??)

This place is also getting good word of mouth; I have it on my list..

Thanks everyone for the terrific suggestions! I am suddenly feeling very hungry. All the restaurants look good to me. I've read about Aldea in the past and viewed someone's photos of the food. Maybe I can sneak off for dinner if the girls won't appreciate it. Hmm. I wouldn't mind a more detailed evaluation, ekscrunchy (or anyone).

We probably will try to hit Motorino for lunch one day. I looked at the website and the pic of that pizza had me salivating. The Smile looks just like the kind of place "the girls" would hang out. Via Emilia's menu appeals to me too.

Is Má Pêche supposed to be any good? I realize it is a block away from the apartment and we could easily stop by any time for lunch, dinner or drinks/snacks.

Ma Peche was really good in my humble opinion - but I like David Chang's food and restaurants, and kind of feel the grousing is just snarky backlash . . . Anyway, Ma Peche is kinda like a midtown hipster cafeteria, not the prettiest atmosphere (it's in a basement), but it's good food and very good service. Of course I've only been once and that was in June, I think one of their first full days, so things may have changed. But if you're right nearby, it's definitely worth a stop.

Sorry for the hijack again, franco, but want to close the loop on my question above.

We did end up going to Má Pêche our first evening in town. Was perfect for us b/c we had taken a red-eye the night before so weren't up for anything major. Food was really good, we walked right in at a weird time (5? 6?) and were seated promptly. Bought some cookies at Milk Bar. Too sweet for me but everyone else liked them.

Also went to Motorino, again at a weird time, 3pm, walked right in. Lunch special, pizza & green salad, $12. Two of had the soppressata, the other two the brussels sprouts pizza. Only other party in the restaurant was an older Italian couple.

Didn't make it to Aldea or the Smile, got lazy with reserving. We did go to Apizz and thought the food was quite good.

Thanks for the suggestions, they were terrific! NYC was as great as ever.

I've recommended Aldea restaurant on this, and other, threads.

This article appears in today's NYTimes and might be of interest to the food obsessed among us:

Leely2, if you're reading...what's your favorite pizza in SF (mine's Delfina)? How does Motorino compare?

sf7307, I love Delfina too. I also like Gialina, Ragazza, Pauline's (tho' Pauline's is a very different style), Pizzetta 211...um, I guess I like a lot of pizza. Haven't tried Tony's Napoletana, have you?

I thought Motorino was quite good, especially at lunch where we found it a terrific value. I was semi-treating two younger cousins, so I appreciated any value I could find. But it's legitimately good pizza in a low-frills environment. Those who had the brussels sprouts pizza were less satisfied than those who had the soppressata. I had the soppressata. Here's my pizza:
