....two retired women (60ish) travelling to New York City, by train, the last week of June and starting to plan. Any suggestions as to what we should do and see?? suggestions regarding restaurants, a nice hotel where we could spend the week....would like something nice, clean and enjoyable, but we are each on a fixed income, so looking for something special. I loved this hotel. it's walking distance to Macy's, the Empire State building and more. Get a subway pass for the week and the rest of the city is yours!

Frankly, the area near Macy's is mostly business and quite dreary at night. In June I would stay in one of the more residential areas with lots of sidewalk cafes for dining, cute shops open late and more activity for people watching.

The upper west side has all of the above, is near many major museums, Central Park - and has 2 subway lines for easy access to other tourist spots.

But- more info on your budget and interests would help us make recos.

You might also want to check out Bergdorf Goodman right next to what used to be the world famous Plaza Hotel.

If you're planning to see a Broadway Show (and you should, of course), sign up at Playbill.com, Theatermania.com, Broadwaybox.com, etc. and keep an eye on the discount offers.

If you want to see a "hot" show (usually sold out and/or no discounts available), look for tickets now.

Shop like the dickens for a hotel room forthwith. Then, keep shopping. There are often amazing bargains on Travelzoo.com and Easyclicktravel.com, but they come and go, so you have to watch diligently.

Lower Eastside Tenement Museum - absolutely wonderful look at what our forefathers lived in. Great tour given by docents. Great neighborhood to walk in, restaurants near by and a museum that IHO is one of the best in the City.

Hello! I'm a senior, too, and preparing for a visit to the Big Apple in 2 weeks. I will file a report on our experiences as soon as we get back but here is a little preview and some things I've discovered in my pre-trip search.

It is myself and my adult daughter making this trip. We settled on the Comfort Inn Midtown for price and location. It's not a perfect 'find' as the room has one queen bed but will have to do. I've found in my searching that small rooms w/1 queen bed are pretty much the norm in NYC unless you are willing to spend quite a bit which we were trying not to do. We got a good rate for February but I just checked June rates and...yikes!!

I mentioned somewhere else on this board that I looked at a place called 'secondhomeonsecondavenue' becsuse of the reviews and price. However, for our dates in February they only had their room w/1 'double' bed available which wouldn't have worked for us. But I was impressed with Carlos(?) whom I spoke to when I called. If you check their website you can see that they have several large rooms with 2 beds for a good price and all their rooms now have a private bath. This might be a good option for the two of you. If nothing else, I think it's worth looking into. Also, one reviewer warned that this place needed to be booked way in advance because of it's popularity.
