New York City--Fashion Museum

My cousin and I (females, late 60's) will spend five days in NYC in a few weeks. Both of us have been to NYC several times and we have most of our trip planned--Broadway shows, MOMA, the MET, the 9/11 Memorial, etc. Has anyone visited the Fashion Institute of Technology Museum? If yes, is it a good way to spend our time and how long should we plan to stay there?

Never been there - so don;t know. Have you been to the Costume Institute at the Met? Their exhibits are always brilliant.

It's a good museum and it's free - doubt you'll be there more than an hour or two -- I have no idea whether it is a good way for you to spend your time.

Depends on your interests. The current exhibition is about Daphne Guinness and her clothes; alot of which are the late Alexander McQueen.

Effectively depends of the exhibitions...

There is also a fashion dept at the MET but depends also of the exhibitions...(costume gallery, but seems not open till spring 2012...).

I just went to the Daphne Guinness. It was very good, and not too crowded. There's also a sportswear exhibit there right now. While in Chelsea you can also explore some of the nearby galleries.

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately I missed the McQueen exhibit, but the Guinness exhibit website looks great. The New Yorker article made me look into the FIT Museum. I have seen other very good fashion exhibits at the MET, and look forward to checking out this new-to-me museum.

The Daphne Guinness and the sports wear exhibits were very worthwhile. We started our morning by walking a good part of the High Line Park--lovely and unexpected--and then walked over to the FIT Museum. Thank you for your comments.
