New York City Budget Accommodations
Hi all
Looking for budget accommodation in NYC the week/weekend of Nov. 23-28. I know it's hard to find, but I am thinking it's out there somewhere. Problem is finding it and knowing that it is clean and trustworthy accommodation. So, I have looked at Portland Square Hotel which has gotten good reviews but it doesn't seem very budget if you want a double bed. I also looked at the Herald Square Hotel - prices are cheap but not sure about anything else. If you have some recommendations, I would appreciate your help. I need to book soon, as this weekend is going to be very full in NYC. Very excited, first time there! Thanks KD P.S. Also, how to score tickets to Spamalot without paying a fortune? Online, tickets are sold out past December. |
I know there's a Marriott Courtyard Times Square, and I believe there's a Residence Inn opening soon or has already opened. I don't know the prices.

That week/weekend is the NYC Marathon, so you will be hard pressed to get inexpensive accomodations, so grab whatever you can find, because the city will fill up.
I would suggest Priceline, Expedia, and my favorite is www.hotels.com. You might check the Hotel Grand Union which is on E 32nd St, nice accomodations and the price is around $130 a night, double bed and all. I saw a couple of the rooms and they were very comfortable and large by NYC standards. The hotel is right in the center of the city, with bus and subway closeby and a few good restaurants as well. Have a great time while you are here. |
We stayed in the Super 8 Times Squre last year and found it to be very clean and comfortable. A really good value for it's location. The name is a bit deceiving, it is a couple of blocks east of T.S. Very central location. The rooms were actually better than we had expected for a Super 8. Have a great time in NY. Sorry can't help wiith the tickets.

Oh I forgot tickets to Spamalot, it is the HOT show this year so tickets will be hard to come by, but you might try www.applause.com and ebay. I have seen alot of show tickets on ebay, in fact bought Yankee Tickets there and had great seats, ok so it's not really broadway, but we kind of think of it that way, lol.
Have a great time. |
You are aware that is Thanksgiving Week the busiest and most expensive week of the year in NYC correct?
If you want Spamalot tickets, buy them as you probably will not see much of anything on sale during that period unless it is last minute. While I haven't stayed at either, the Super 8 and Travel Inn get good reviews. |
Forgot about this site but Places To Stay (www.PlacesToStay.com) always has inexpensive offbeat accommodations.

Another recommendation for the Super 8 Times Square. We stayed there in July of '03 and were very happy with it. Good continental breakfast too. Highly recommended in the Frommer's guides. Or at least it was at that time.

Spamalot is indeed sold out - and the only tickets I've seen at ebay are at a premium - not a discount. If you really want to see it I think you're just going to have to open the wallet a little more.
You might try going to the box office in the am to see if there are any returns (call them to see what time they open) - but that still will be full price. Getting any tickets that week without a scalper will be a miracle. |
Sorry about my "marathon" post. I misread your initial thread.
Actually that is Thanksgiving week and the city is really busy alot of hotels are already sold out so I would suggest if you find a decent price jump on it. Spamalot, is probably out of the question on a budget, the tickets will be through a broker if available at all and will be over $200 per ticket. TKTS downtown would probably be your best bet. It is on the back side of the Prudential Building, at the corner or Fulton and Water St. It opens at 10am and only accepts cash, so go early for the best availability. Thanksgiving week finding tickets will be whatever is left over, so you will probably have to be a bit flexible on what you are going to see. Have a great time while you are here. |
You might consider the Travel Inn. It is a budget hotel that gets pretty good reviews.
