We are visiting NYC during July. We are looking at the Mont Morris B & B - not to be confused with the Mount Morris B & B. Has anyone stayed here? Or can anyone recommend a reputable (clean/safe/on subway line) B & B for under $200 (family of 3 - 2 beds)? Thanks!

Is there some particular reson you want a B&B? Travelzoo.com has several very good otel deals posted for July for under $200, w/2 beds available, depends on your dates.

thanks for the info. we have tried them but all the "deals" end up being well over $250 a night. New York is meant for 2 - adding a third person means lots more dollars!

I don't know where the Mont Morris B&B is located but I'm guessing it's in the Bronx and your really don't want to stay in the Bronx.

I'd suggest looking at the Harlem Landmark Guest House on W 147th. It is one block away from the A train which gets you midtown in 15 minutes.

There is a grocrey store around the corner for snacks.

You also might try a hotel on E 23nd callded the Hotel Grand Union, their rates are really good and it's midtown close to subway and bus stops.

Mont Morris is on 120th near Lenox - so - not so far uptown as the Landmark. Since they don't mention taxes I would assume this is an illegal B&B (most in NYC are) - meaning they don;t meeti fire safety requirements - not do they collect city taxes.

The area is OK, mostly gentrfied, although some blocks/sections are still somewht gritty. Not sure how close to the subway - but you could check by looking at hopstop.com.

I wouldn;t do a B&B - but then I want hotel services. And I don't think they actually provide a breakfast - just an in-room kitchen and access to a grocery or bodega.

I assume your 3rd person is over 12 since the B&Bs website says no kids under age 12. I agree with nytraveler that this is probably not a legal situation since NYC law makes most arrangements of the sort illegal. I noted they also seem to be a cash only operation. (They mention that credit card fees are high, but many businesses take that into account when setting their rates) I would only stay in a place where I have the backing of a credit card behind me that could dispute any issues with the bill, conditions of the lodging if not as described etc.

Stayed here two different times. The rooms are clean and a nice basic breakfast is included in the price. Very reasonable for NYC.

We have stayed at the Eastgate Tower Suites Hotel located at 222 E. 39th Street many times - look at http://www.affinia.com
Choose the Eastgate from the drop down menu. The advantage here is that you will have a small kitchen. Perfect for breakfast in if you choose, drinks and snacks. Many affordable places to eat nearby.

I use Hotwire.com a lot for NYC; it allows you to put in the number of people for the room; 3 people would certainly get you two beds.

You won't know the name of the hotel until you book, but you can choose your area. I would and do use the booking agencies mentioned above rather than consider a B&B in NYC.

Check out the rates at Comfort Inn and Suites in Long Island City. You'll get a 2 bedded room for well within your budget for those dates.

Are all 126 reliable? Probably not. But most are just as reliable as what you'll find here. And I say that simply because, every time someone links to that site, inevitably someone states, "People post fake reviews there." And people do, indeed, do so. But people also post fake reviews here.

There are plenty of illegal apartments, hotels, and b and b's for rent in New York City that are advertised all over the internet including on Craig's List (horrors), vrbo, and Trip Advisor. The law is clear and most of these places are illegal.

I would strongly urge you NOT to choose an illegal lodging. Instead, stay in a legitimate hotel in Queens. There are several in Long Island City that are one or two subway stops from midtown and offer clean and safe accommodations very close to Manhattan, often for under $150 this time of the year. All these rooms have 2 beds.

The Country Inn & Suites is usually cheap if available, as is the Comfort Inn Long Island City. These are in a rather charmless but very safe and convenient neighborhood. If you stay in Queens, just be sure to stay close to a major subway line. Ask us if you aren't sure.

But please don't stay in an illegal hotel that could be unsafe. There are just a handful of legitimate B&Bs in NYC.

Agree - NYC has very few legal B&Bs - most people illegally renting out rooms (they don;t have proper fire safety equipment and don't meet other requirements to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy for short-term rentals). I know this is different from most places but the real estate market here is an anomaly - you won't find similar elsewhere - and that's why B&Bs don;t really make sense unless you pick one ofhte few legal ones (they will clearly state on their web sites that they charge the city hotel taxes).

I ended up not picking it for my upcoming trip, but I was able to ascertain that the B&B Stay the Night in Harlem was legitimate. I called the City of New York and got a housing person who said it was and sent me to the link for any future ones to look up.

Stay the Night is a legitimate B&B - they do charge taxes. Not sure if they have rooms for 3 people - I only glanced at 2 rooms and they had one large bed each. But the prices are higher - $230 plus tax and up.

Also note - this is on 93rd Street - nowhere near Harlem. This is a very upscale neighborhood - on E 93rd Between Fifth and Madison, but also note it is atypical townhouse - vertical rather than horizontal - and there are lots of stairs to the rooms on the 3rd floor and up.

Sorry, nytraveler, I should have re-read the thread more closely. I looked at a couple of others in the 120s and 130s that I believe would put them in Harlem. They looked really nice, but were booked already so I didn't check them out fully.
