New York City & Hot Weather Dress

Going to New York next month and I suspect it will be hot (I hope). How casual can I dress without calling attention to myself if the temps are in the 80ies? Can I wear sandals or sneakers and Bermuda shorts, with a nice T-shirt sightseeing, going to a Yankees game, or visiting the Statue of Liberty, etc.
We don't plan on eating at any exclusive restaurants, maybe Irish Pubs and such. How dressed does a person need to be in such establishments?

Anything and everything goes! Dress for your own comfort. All of your choices listed are fine.

"Next month"?? Does that mean early, mid or late September? As does tend to start the cool off as the month progress consider a pair of slacks/jeans and a long sleeve shirt too.

Clean clothes are more than acceptable.

Oh aduchamp1 you're such a wise ass. I suspect you're probably a native New Yorker. Useful travel info is apparently not in your repertoire. Why don't you survey you tube - probably more your speed.

Dear Roy

My response is accurate and tries to be fun. And I have no idea what You Tube has to do with this.

Unless you visit a handful of expensive restaurants, there is no dress code in NYC.

Lighten up and enjoy NY, and there is a world of restaurants besides Irish pubs, most of which serve hamburgers and that Irish classic, Cajun Chicken any way.

People generally wear whatever they want. (Sadly for some of us that have to look at them. I saw one woman at the aquarium in shorty shorts and tank top - who had a figure rivaling that of the seals.)

I have 2 major recos - wear comfy shoes with some support - people not used to walking long distances that wear flip flops can easily end up with a turned ankle due to the uneven pavements - as well as aboslutely filthy feet.

And do bring a small folding umbrella - since rain IS possible (surprising as that is to some people).

You may have a misconception about New York City weather. September is usually the best month weather-wise in NYC. It's not hot at all ... if you come in mid-September, the temps may be in the low 80s some days, but there will be low humidity, and it will certainly cool off at night.

During the day many people wear shorts and T-shirts when it's warm, so you won't have any problems there. I have a personal rule that I don't ever wear shorts or T-shirts in the evening when I'm eating out, even in a casual restaurant. But I fear that kind of civility is quickly passing in the city.

I would recommend that you avoid flip-flops; they offer no support for your feet and no protection for your toes, both a bad idea on NYC streets. I'm not that fond of sandals of any kind for city walking myself, but that's a personal preference.

For cheap and casual eating, you can certainly do better than Irish pubs, especially in Hell's Kitchen.

Sept. is not typically as warm as it sounds like you think it is. http://www.ny.com/general/weather.html Casual clothes for daytime sightseeing is fine.

As opposed to right now where it's something in the neighborhood of miserable, particularly for those of us transiting from one temperate zone (Pacific NW) to another (Scotland.)

Still, you gotta love it - in Times Square yesterday watching some hiphop/break dancers who were being photographed by a bunch of visiting soldiers... from Alabania. (For those of us of a certain age the idea of Albanian soldiers in Manhattan is a real head-shaker.)

Tsk, tsk R2M. We native NY'ers are always *very* happy to help and, yes, there may be a little side of wise-ass. Careful with the attitude. As for dress, I would suggest jeans and a nice T or polo for the pubs. Mid to late Sept may not be shorts weather (bermuda or otherwise). Have fun.

Thanks to all of you for the info. We are really looking forward to the trip. It has been a long time since I have seen the city. I met my wife in the Bronx back in the 60ies. I remember a lot of people wore suits going to the old Yankee Stadium verus the casual of the Polo Grounds. Also the dark clothes come in after Labor Day so a person put away their light summer wear no matter the weather.

It appears things have changed a bit as far as dress goes. The info will make my packing for the trip much easier.

We will be in the city Sept 19th through Sept 24th. I have tickets for a Yankees game and the Statue of Liberty. Will walk the Brooklyn Bridge, visit Ground Zero, and of course the Times Square area.

Can't wait to see the place again. Thanks again.

By the way, we are coming from our home in Alaska. The temps have been in the 50ies and the 60ies most of this summer. Worst summer since we have been here so the 70ies will feel great.
