New York City Accomodations

I'm planning a trip to NYC in May and found a hotel called The Latham. Anybody know about this hotel and if so what do you think? I have a rate for 2 people with taxes at $111 per night.

Thanks!

Per google

Location:
4 East 28th Street

Web site:
www.thelathamhotel.com

Not one single picture of the actual room on their website, just a written description. I don't think you will be getting much in NYC for $111 in May.

Hopefully one of the other NYC super knowledgeable and very helpful people like mcclaurie or nytraveler will chime in.

Come back and tell us your top budget and you will get some other hotel suggestions within that range.

Good luck and enjoy NYC.

Keep in mind that the rates quoted DO NOT include the outrageous taxes you have to pay when you check out.
I think it's somewhere around 14%!!!

Best deal ... check out Craigslist.org ...
SF will pop up because that's where it started. Look on the menu of cities on the right, click New York. Then look under housing. Some of the headings you could look under are: Sublets/Temporary, and Vacations. There will be a search engine at the top to narrow your search; ie Sleeps 2 - (or) the neighborhood you want - (or) short term - (or) the month you want it for.
You might find really cheap deals in Harlem ... but I don't advise you to stay there.
Stick with Chelsea, Gramercy Park, or the Village, or East Village. Travelling to all parts of NYC is easy from those places.
If you are planning to do a lot of runnin around & sightseeing ... even if U R staying less than a week ... get a Weekly Metro card ($24) ... you can take as MANY trips as you want 24/7 for 7 days. Even if you R only staying for 4 days it's still worth it, because a daily unlimited is $7 7x4=28.

Hope this advise was helpful

Have never heard of/seen this hotel. And it doesn;t appear at all on tripadvisor - which is quite odd. Have not been able to find a web site or any info on it - and would be extremely unconfortabel staying in hotel about which I could get no info - esp at such a ridiculously low price.

If you get what you pay for you will be in big trouble.

Please provide the web address so we can look at it. And also who you are (how many, ages etc) and what you're looking for. There are some super budget options in the city - but for $100 in May you're pretty well looking at a small european style place with a shared bath or a hostel.

Your other option is Priceline - not sure if they're showing anything at $100 for May - but it's worthwhile looking as long as there are only 2 of you.

Sorry - there are a couple of "hotels" not too far from that area that essentially rent by the hour. I'm not suggesting this is one - but not finding any info is a cause for concern.

No - the SROs are essentially gone in Manhattan - but sevral have been turned into budget hotels (naturally after some degree of renovation) - no inch of space in Manhattan goes to waste.

But what I was talking of was super cheap places that are used by transients and hookers.

I'm not saying this is what the Latham is. Just that I can;t fgind anything about it - and the area is fairly dreary at night.

I'm surprised no one ever mentions the Milford Plaza on 48th and 8th. It's in Hell's Kitchen (a very trendy spot now) with wonderful restaurants (on 9th). Milford Plaza is for tourists but so accessable to Times Square etc. There is a public bus 1/2 block away from hotel going North. Much nicer to ride the bus than the subways...you see so much more. Call the hotel directly you'll do better than on Hotel.com etc. We've stayed there each year for about 10 years and were very pleased. Last year was less than $160 a night in May. Hint..ask for a corner room - high up..rooms will be much bigger and you won't hear the street noise. Have a wonderful time!

This is just me but I would not book a hotel in Manhattan that lists as its amenities; air conditioning, color TV, phone, and private bath.

That's not a great location in the city, but it is within walking distance to everything. I would probably not recommend at hotel, based on the location and the old look to the hotel (I lived a block away from there).

I can recommend the Hotel Grand Union which is on E 32nd St. The hotel is new, all the rooms are very nicely done, lots of restaurants in the area, close to shopping and transportation and the price is very reasonable.

You might try looking at www.hotels.com for other hotel suggestions as well.

Have a great time while you are here.

That's a scary price for NY, it will totally be a pit.
CHeck out the hotel martinique on broadway and 8th i think. It's a holiday inn, decent and usually reasonable.

I have real concerns about this hotel.

First - anyplace that advertises "better action outside" sounds like a lot of the action (professional) moves inside at night.

Second - when they advertise old furniture, tiny TVs and that they have AC (every building in NYC has had AC since about 1955) this means it is a DUMP.

I would never risk this.

Would suggest you look at Priceline since there are only 2 of you - but $100 for May is not realistic - and compatible with clenliness and safety - unless you go for a hostel or one of the small european hotels with shared baths you may find downtown.

You are planning on staying in NY for 8 nights? If its a budget constraint I'd find somewhere else and stay for a shorter time.

Have you thought about a B&B? This website at least has pictures of the accomodations - Good Luck!

This is in response to Earl30 -why the hostility??! My my, first of all you spend so little time in your hotel room that all you would want is a clean, (no mildew as far as I could see), well kept, safe room. We love the Milford Plaza and so does a lot of others especially airline attendants as this hotel is full of them. Firstly,it's so close to the theater and the heart of NY. Secondly, it's safe, with many security people, thirdly, you can get a great cup of coffee in the gift shop. There's also a deli on the ground floor, plus a bar with a pool table...etc. Last year we were on the 24th floor and had a view of the Hudson River from one window and a view of 8th Ave from all the way up to Columbus Circle from the other. When the sun set it was awesome. This is an inexpensive place to stay in NY, not the St. Regis. There are so many putdowns of places on this site that others have enjoyed. Be cool!

sparkerlaw -

The flight crews don;t like the Mildew - that's where the airline chooses to put them up because it's the cheapest place they can find.

While I wouldn;t actually say it is dangerous - there have been stories of strangers wandering the halls and poor security - in addition to it's general dreary quality.

If you're happy there fine - but I couldn;t let it be reco'd to foreign visitors without a dissent.

A search above will show the names of several reasonable bargain places - including I believe the Red Roof - and Priceline is a real option for 2 people.

sparkerlaw, sure there are some people who like any place and don't care about the room -- as you said because they only need a place to sleep. but i've heard dozens of stories of people who were booked at the milford plaza, especially by uk travel agents who left after one night or even sooner giving up their entire prepayment because of the poor condition of the rooms, the lack of cleanliness, and general dissatisfaction. i'm sorry if saying it like it is offends you, but i think this site is for warning people. if someone says they don't really care about how bad the room is because they only need a place to sleep, then fine, they should be able to see that the conditions i describe won't bother them. my commements were geared for those with higher standards in mind for their hotel rooms. some people don't like staying in hotels that receive numerous health code violations. others aren't bothered by that. it's fine with me whichever category you're in. stay cool.
