Please help with suggestions for accommodation in New York City for two visits end of July for 3 nights and mid August for 3 nights for 5 adults first time and 3 adults secong time. Nobody in the group has ever been to New York City. Would like to think accommodation could be found within $200 per night. Apartment or Hotel.

Are you saying $200 per night for 5 people? That will be tough. Look at the hotels in Long Island City that are near the subway.

You cannot put 5 people in 1 hotel room - it is against fire laws. for 5 you need either to get a suite or 2 separate rooms. There are many hotels in the city that are either all suite or have suites. Try the Affinia group of hotels, as well as the Beacon and Radio City Apartments. The latter is in a great location and budget but usually sells out months in advance. The rate you are looking at is VERY low for so many people - so I would check discounts sites such as travelzoo, kayak and quikbook.

Getting a room for 3 people you have a lot more choices - since most hotels have double double rooms (2 double beds rather than the one double bed that is usual) - but again you are often looking at a larger or deluxe room to fit 3 people. Look at t he same discount sights.

If you can;t find anything in Manhattan for your rates consider staying inn Long Island city - which is only about 20 minutes away by subway - but do make sure the hotel you pick is right next to a station - some aren't. And do realize that the areas are generally mixed use and often not especialyl pleasant.

You can find hotel rooms in NYC for $200 a night. But you will need 2 rooms for 5. If I'm not mistaken, Priceline bids could get u just one bed. You can go to Priceline and see their reduced rates on select hotels and not have to bid. My friend just got a nice room in NYC for less than $150 per night using the discounted rooms on PL

You cannot put 3 people in a Priceline room -- 2 is max. Even if it was allowed, how in earth are you going to fit 3 adults in a [small] NYC hotel room with a good chance it only has 1 bed [and it could be a double and way less likely a queen or king]. Therefore, you would need 3 rooms on Priceline.

You can use Hotwire and put in 3 people when searching for a room. That will at least ensure 2 beds, hopefully 2 of the 3 won't mind sharing a bed.

Still don't know if OP meant $200 a room or for all needed rooms. Summer is a busy time in NYC, so sooner rather than later here is the way to go.

1) Prices in hotels fluctuate dramatically by date based on supply and demand. If you're talking about THIS July, you may have a problem.

2) $200/night for a room for 3-5 is unlikely

3) While private apt. rentals are illegal for less than 30 days, there are suite hotels (ie affinia.com nycsalisbury.com, radiocityapartments.com, beaconhotel.com, the Kimberly, Best Western Hospitality, Doubletree Guest Suites) that will sleep 5 in a one or two bedroom suite, but it will likely be more than $200/night.

There are some b & b's that rent the equivalent of an apt. but they're usually just studios or 1 bedrooms, not places for 5 adults.

4) It is possible to get a discounted room using Hotwire.com rather than Priceline, BUT still not for 5 people. You'd need to book 2 rooms, 3 & 2. Betterbidding.com is a website that has lists of Hotwire hotels by area and star level so you can usually figure out what hotel it is.

5) If you can't find accommodation within your budget in Manhattan, staying a train stop outside of Manhattan in say Long Island City (the Verve and the Country Inn & Suites are some of the better options there) or Jersey City at a place like the Westin Jersey City or the Doubletree Club, but again these won't sleep 5 adults in one room.

The Eastgate Tower hotel, 222 E. 39th Street may work for you. This is an older hotel, furniture a bit dated but very clean. They offer some 2 bedroom. Thank you all. The accommodation is for my daughter and family so I have passed on all your suggestions. She does realise they need more than one hotel room with 5 and so we are not surprised that you think that is not possible in Manhbattan for two hotel rooms. I do remember the advice about apartments short term. I have already suggested the outer areas but they want to be in Manhattan so will have to revise their budget. They have holiday accommodation booked in Avalon and want to see New York City before and after their time in Avalon.
