New York City

Am traveling to NY with a good friend Sept 16 thru 20th. We are both in our mid-30's. My friend is the single one in this group so am hoping for some advice on where we should spend our evenings. We do not care for the intense club scene but do enjoy a social environment with music and pleny of drinks! We like to do happy hour and I am certain my friend would enjoy a conversation with an attractive male. :-)

What type of scene or music do you like - as an avid bar-goer and professional drinker, I may be of assistance.

ac291: for burlesque, The Box offers irritating club style-overpriced-bottle service shows, The Slipper Room is more down to earth. If you are looking for rockabilly go-go dancers, Motor City and Otto's Shrunken Head all offer nights with that, usually on the weekend. All above have websites with schedules, are located on the lower east side, except for Otto's which is in the east village on 14th street.

thanks so much for the info cherrybomb!

with regards to music - we love Jazz, soul, soft lounge music...dont want to go to a place thats all flash/snobby...something comfortable! haha i know that sounds vague but we dont hang out at bars much anymore so dont want to feel intimidated by a paticular scene....

I'm an old geezer, CB... but would Iridium be a good choice? Where is it located now?

Iridium
Broadway at 51st St

Gwendolynn: I always liked the Jazz Standard on 27th b/t Park and Lex. or St Nicks on 149th St St. @ Nicholas Ave - though that is quite far uptown. I can't comment on Iridium, have only been there once, very briefly and that was like 8 or 9 years ago.

ac291: no, that isn't vague, I avoid the same scene like the plague mostly because I don't want to pay for it. Avoid the box - listed above. You might like Von - on Bleeker b/t Elizabeth and Bowery. They have a downstairs lounge as well as an upstairs and people are friendly. It can be crowded, but that's ok.

Alternately Little Branch in the west village on Leroy and 7th Ave I think - I cannot ever remember how the streets intersect there, but know how to walk it from the W. 4th train stop - sorry. That is almost all table service though. Sapphire Lounge and a couple other places on the block, that you might like, on Eldridge b/t Houston and Stanton.

Lolita on Allen and Broome is also a good choice. If you wander lower into the LES you will find some other places worth stopping that are more local than the standard LES scene that are of note.

Thanks for the helpful responses. We are not too excited about standing in a long line to get into a club. Looking for something more loungy and laid back. Also, we are hoping to find some place where nice jeans, heels and cute top are appropriate. The only music we don't care for is that crazy hard core dance/techno stuff. Sucks the life right out of me!

ac291, we have looked into the rooftop lounges as well. Pretty cool and seem to be more our style.
