If you have upwards of $1000 per night, then the Mandarin Oriental is great, but if you are a mere mortal, then I think it's probably not in the cards.
The best-value hotel (in my opinion) is the Residence Inn Central Park, which shares a building with a Courtyard and is on the corner of 54th Street and Broadway. Some rooms on higher floors face the park and offer great views and an unparalleled location, but the park is still 5 blocks away. The Le Parker Meridien is also a nice hotel somewhat closer to the park, and some rooms have views. There's also a Ritz-Carlton on Central Park South. Ditto for the Essex House and the Baccarat. My very favorite hotel on the park is not the Mandarin Oriental but rather the Sherry-Netherland, which is a different type of place and very quiet; rooms are individually owned, and only a few dozen are in the rental pool at any given time (many of the hotel's residents are permanent). But not all rooms are available at all times, most are suites, and most are expensive. Some of the rooms for rent are on lower floors, which don't offer a very good view, and some are in the back. |
I like the Park Lane hotel. It's near The Plaza. It used to be a Helmsley hotel. I have no idea who owns it now. Fantastic location but a huge hotel. Some rooms are dared but I think it's slowly being remodeled. Great views. I stayed there with friends and they didn't like the fact there was no room service but when every restaurant delivers why do you need room service. There's a small deli right out the back door that does breakfast and will deliver.
It's usually very reasonably priced especially for the location and NYC in general. |
The Park Lane is our hotel in NYC.

Park Lane is probably your best bet for a large room & a great view. With AAA they run around $360 in June and $380 in October, plus $37 per night resort fee plus taxes, so just under your max.
Mandarin Oriental has a 3rd night free program which brings their base rate down to just under $500 per night, but as yet it's not offered for June or October dates. |
Yes, the Park Lane is also a very good choice, and it's a convenient location.
