New York Accommodation Advice
 

Hi all,

I am a bit new to posting here so hopefully you can help me. My boyfriend and I are planning a 7 night holiday to New York, Nov 12-19, 2013. I have been given a price for two hotels, 1)The Beacon, near Central Park or 2)The Sheraton on the Hudson, Weehawken. The second hotel seems like a nicer hotel with pool, bar and restaraunt and more amenities but obviously the location is not so central. The Beacon seems like a nice hotel but is working out a bit more expensive obviously because the location is fantastic. My question is, is it better to stay further out for what seems like a better hotel or is the travelling in and out worth it? I have never been to New York so I am unsure about transport and areas.

Any advice you could offer would be great.

I would stay in NYC as the schlepping back & forth not only adds to your travel expenses but is tiring.

I agree--if you can swing it, definitely stay in Manhattan.

I stayed at the Beacon in October and loved it. I would stay in Manhattan.
We had a tiny kitchenette I thought we may use but we loved being out and about so much we never used it, even though there is a great market across the road. Everything is a walk or subway ride away. There is an amazing feeling walking around Manhattan. I couldnt get enough of being out on the streets. Our hotel was clean, had lovely staff, a laundry (which was a great convenience)and in a perfect location. We didnt need anything more than that. I cant explain how exciting it is to step out from the hotel lobby onto the street and take in the sights and sounds of the city.
I was there a week and miss it every day since.

Always choose Manhatten if you have a choice. The difficulty with the hotel in Weehawken is that you may have to take a bus or ferry into Manhattan. That can add as much as $20 per person per day for round-trip transportation, and that's on top of bus and subway fares within NYC. You have to consider the cost of transportation anytime you come from NJ and then see if it's still cheaper to stay there.

Believe me, having a bar and restaurant in a Sheraton isn't nearly the benefit of having access to the bars and restaurants in Manhattan, even if they aren't in your hotel. If you stayed at the Beacon, you'd have dozens of bars and restaurants within 2 blocks of your front door.

Do not even consider staying in NJ if you can get the Beacon for your budget. It's a very pleasant hotel in a fantastic location. You can walk to a lot of major museums and central park - and even the theater district and there are 2 subway lines to take you anyplace in the city.

Staying in Jersey means a trek back and forth and the services don't run all night the way the subway does (they are designed for working commuters)- so getting back after a show or late dinner or a club is a major PIA.

It's better to stay central and pay a little bit more for your hotel!!

You should DEFINITELY stay at the Beacon. There's no question.
