3 Europeans in New York in July for 6 days - what do you guys suggest as "must sees"?

Double decker bus tour of the city. There is a website I forget the name of the outfit.

Gray Line All-Loops tour, $49, for 2 full days of hop-on-hop-off narrated touring.

Walk around Central Park
Eating in Little Italy

Circle Line boat trip around Manhattan Island - a great overview - especially n the summer.

Staten Island ferry (free) to look at Lady Liberty.

Walk down Fifth Avenue in the 50's/40's some day at lunch hour. Great for seeing some upscale stores, Rockefeller center, etc - but also the perfect vision of New York as THE teeming metropolis - I dare you to see any of the sidewalk at all there are so many people out walking.

Spend a day in SoHo NoHo being trendy - gallery hopping, shopping and cafeing.

Pick a neighborhood and explore - see one of the major sights (Met, Natural History Museum?) and then just spend the rest of the day exploring the neighborhood around it. (If you look at a detailed guidebook you'll see tons of small museums/activities in any Manhattan Neighborhood).

Do a theme tour. I was on jury duty recently and there were a pack of tourists trying to get into the jury panel room becuase it's used as the courtroon in Law & Order (do you guys get that show?). It turned out they were doing a walking tour of a lot of the New York sites featured on the show. (Superior court, Foley Square, several restaurants, areas of the upper west side etc.)

Do the Museum of the City of New York - anchors the upper end of Museum Mile. It's never crowded and usually has interesting special exhibits as well as the basics. It's also a chance to see some of the really old-style up-scale real estate (how the incredibly rich and private live.)

Consider taking one day trip outside of the city to cool off - it can be really steamy in July.

Some options:

A day at the beach - Long Island (most visitors don't realize this but New York has some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world - just as nice as anything in the Caribbean) - and not crowded if you go during the week.

Up the Hudson _ I think there are boats to Bear Mountain - with real bears. Or go to the Rockefeller estate (Kykuit? sp). Or tour the US Military Academy at West Point - they've been training soldiers there since the Revolution.
