New Year's in NYC

We'll be in NYC for six nights and have several things (like shows, etc...) planned, but I'm stumped for New Year's Eve night. My fiance and I are staying in Time Square, but I'm concerned about traffic, etc... Any recommendations or tips? Thanks!

Where you're staying in Times Square is a significant factor in how the New year's Eve congestion will impact you. If you're close to the center of the action (i.e. on or just adjacent Broadway within a few blocks of where the ball drops) it may be very difficult to get into or away from your hotel once evening arrives. I refer strictly to pedestrian traffic - don't even dream of using a car in NYC on New Year's Eve!

I'm not clear on if you have any interest in being in Times Square for the big event or totally want to avoid it. If it is something that interests you then maybe you have an advantage, depending on exactly where your hotel is. Should you decide to be out with the crowd, you can try it and you will know pretty early on if it's something you want to do all the way through and if you change your mind, with some effort and know-how, you can squeeze your way back to your hotel and/or on on to plan B. As far as driving in the city goes, my experience has been different. I have driven in the city after 9pm and have found on the street parking in the 50's not very far, but far enough, from the action.
