new years eve ideas

We have been to Annapolis,Boston,DC,Philadelphia, Jackson Hole,Las Vegas and Orange County CA. Looking for somewhere different to have a fun new years eve, We are in our early forties. We want to be able to drink and not have to drive. A City that offers more to explore would be great we can stay about 5 days. Any ideas?

New Orleans.

We've done San Antonio and that was fun; you can stay on the river, and there are tons of restaurants and bars where you wouldn't have to drive. When we were there, they had a ball drop and live bands.

Is there 5 days worth of stuff to explore in these cities, they sounds interesting but would hate to be bored after day 2.
thanks

If you did SA, I'd probably pair it with time in another city like Austin.

How about San Francisco or New York?

New York on new years eve is probably too many people. Looking for a different state. We have been all over Lower CA. Never have been to Texas. We have been to carribean and Europe, but wanted to stay in US.

San Francisco on New Year's Eve is the same as San Francisco every other day of the year except more expensive. It's just not a "New Year's Eve" kind of place.

I second the New Orleans suggestion. I think 5 days would be a perfect amount of time there. Although I don't typically travel over New Year's Eve, I just booked my own NYE trip to NO for this year.

Unsure of New Orleans for five days. What tours do they offer?

dmlove Oct 2nd, 2008 11:25 AM

What's the weather like in NO around New Year's?

volcanogirl Oct 2nd, 2008 11:29 AM

If you do go with New Orleans, check out the cab situation ahead of time; my husband was there for the national championship game, and it took him literally hours to get a cab that would take him back to his hotel.

I am leaning against new orleans, any other ideas?

Have been researching aspen and winter vacation ideas, any thoughts?

Graybrew1 ~ typically Aspen, Vail and Breckenridge/CopperMtn(CO) all

require a Weeks stay during the holiday week.

They offer activities, other than skiing; will be at their prime for beauty and crowds, and you can have lodging that would allow drinking and walking back.

Another vote for New Orleans.

It is a GREAT city for NYE with a Gumbo Pot countdown and fireworks on the river.

Stay in the French Quarter or Marigny and you never need a taxi.

Museums such as NOMA, Scuplture garden at NOMA, Ogden, D Day, National Jazz Park with free performances and many other smaller ones.

You can take a free guided tour of the French Quarter with the National Park Service.

There are walking tours of the Garden District, Cemetaries and Haunted tours too.

You can also spend a day on a Plantation tour or Swamp tour.

Ride the Streetcar down St Charles Ave and brunch at Commander's Palace.

The Zoo, Audubon Park, Aquarium and Insectarium are great.

Rent a bicycle to explore.

The National Championship game is only here every 4 years. That was this year.

The Sugar Bowl is Jan 2, 2009 and those college football fans are lots of fun.

Weather can be anywhere from 30-80 degrees.

I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be. (well, europe maybe)
