New Sammy's Lunch/Lucier in Portland Dinner

We stopped by New Sammy's Cowboy Bistro yesterday on our up to the Oregon Coast and had lunch at New
Sammy's Cowboy Bistro. They have added a gorgeous, new dining room in the front of this small restaurant. There are 6 entrees to choose from for lunch for $15/pp. I chose the Truffle and Ricotta Raviolis with fava bean, sweet corn, sweet onnion, garlic whistle shitake mushrooms, piquillo peppers and basil, excellent! My husband had the mixed greends salad with duck liver terrine, grilled duck breast, duck breast prosciutto, valencia oranges and spiced walnuts and orange-pomegranate cream. He loved this! For dessert we shared the Chocolate cake with housemade Cherry ice cream. Yum! We can't wait to back again and would love to try dinner here. :)

For dinner last night we went to the beautiuful Lucier down by the waterfront in Portland. We spent over 2 hours here enjoying the food and gorgeous ambiance of this new restaurant in Portland. Pretty amazing place! ***kim*** ((f))

Sorry, Kim, but a poster on Yelp has a different opinion:

A LOT of work is needed to make Lucier everything it was intended to be. The waitstaff is pretty good, but rigid.

I hosted a party for 12 in the private dining room, and was less than pleased. The entire party ordered foie gras, which was consistently overcooked, the glass pours and serving sizes were laughable, and the kitchen managed to run out of dessert, despite my having selected a menu nearly a week in advance.

All in all, the food tasted great, but I left the restaurant hungry. Probably worth a trip in a few months, or a year, when Lucier is (hopefully) running a bit more smoothly.

Faina--Yes, I have heard that they are still working out the kinks. It will be interesting to see if they can make it with the economy here not so hot.

MMS, as you know I'm working up a plan ;) This restaurant has the price sign $$$$ - with this high price it must be immaculate!

Please note Kim gives such a detailed description of Sammy's (making me hungry :) ) and no word about food at Lucier, this should be a red flag for future readers.

Fodorite018 Jul 21st, 2008 03:19 PM

Faina, there are more red flags than you can imagine, trust me.

FainaAgain Jul 21st, 2008 03:22 PM

Oh, speaking of red flags... there is a russian store in Portland "russian art gallery", do you know if they sell Soviet red flags? Or souvenirs/t-shirts from that bygone era?

Fodorite018 Jul 21st, 2008 03:27 PM

Faina--I can find out. As you know, one of DD's friends was on exchange in Russia this past year. She just got back recently and has been checking out all the Russian stores and markets. I will ask her and let you know.

Thank you :)

Faina, that is right across from Nordstrom. So it would be really easy for you to find it when you are here in September. It is basically kitty corner from Pioneer Square.

FainaAgain Jul 21st, 2008 03:50 PM

Yes, I've marked the map already! Man with umbrella, weather forecast, USSR, skip Nordstrom - how's that for a visitor's plan? ;)

Just to note, New Sammy's now is open for lunch W-Su; 12-2.
A nice addition to our dining scene.

kimamom Jul 22nd, 2008 01:54 PM

bbqboy, have you been to lunch here yet? ***kim*** ((f))

Fodorite018 Jul 22nd, 2008 02:02 PM

Fains--I have no doubt that you have a good plan:) BTW, it is looking like we will be around during the time you are here.

Glad to hear New Sammy's is now open for lunch. Had a great dinner there a few years ago, but I was going to be unable to go for dinner this year during my annual October trip to Ashland. Looking forward to lunch instead -- thanks for the information!

You're welcome! They have a very impressive, innovative dessert menu at New Sammy's! ***kim*** ((*))

Lucier fell into that bad Portland habit of having coed restrooms. Sorry but if I am spending $300 on dinner I don't expect to deal with the toilet seat up and urine on the floor that I have to avoid by holding up my pant leg. You just don't see that in women only restrooms.

kimamom Aug 6th, 2008 07:09 AM

The restrooms were spotless at Lucier, everything here is of the highest standards. ***kim*** ((f))

$300? I read somewhere else that you can go cheap and do the $65/person pris fixe menu. Throw in a glass of wine, and you might get out of there for under $200. But, you'd probably still be hungry and end up at McD's. Kinda like I was after dinner a Hurley's a couple years ago....

Kimamom, what's the corkage at Lucier? Or, did you take your own wine?

Red flags abound. Some reviews of restaurants come from other websites, not from real life experiences.

Seems someone loves to surf the net for reviews.

Not sure if the reviews with a lot of details are real or the one's without? I mean, info is on the web. I'm just sayin'.

beachbum Aug 15th, 2008 02:56 PM

Wineaux, since you're reading.... I heard last weekend that Lucier has a $10 million wine list/cellar. Wow!! The guy who told me said friends of his spent $1000 of their $2000 dinner tab (two people) on two bottles. Geez... I don't think I could bring myself to do that.

About the reviews... The ones I think we can be pretty sure aren't copied or plagiarized are those that say something like, "The chocolate cake with raspberry sauce was full of chocolate and raspberry flavors." Everything else is suspect. ;-)
