New Orleans - Weekend Getaway in March
 

My husband and I are newlyweds and would like to take a trip in March. We were thinking New Orleans would be fun. Looking for a hotel with some romantic qualities but in/near the action! (Where ever that might be.) I haven't been there since I was 10! So any tips would be appreciated.

New Orleans is probably the second most talked about destination on this board - second of course to Hawaii :)) Do a textbox search and you will find tons of information.

The French Quarter is where most of the action is and where I think most 1st time visitors should stay. The Garden District is another popular area, but it's more residential and doesn't have as many restaurants, clubs, museums, and other attractions as the FQ. Definitely ride the St Charles Streetcar up there though - it's beautiful. The Fauburg Marigny is the neighborhood directly downriver from the FQ and is also nice, but more residential than the FQ.

The Royal Sonesta puts you in the Bourbon St. action and yet the rooms are great. Try the "famous door" across the street. Definitely eat at the Commander's Palace (cab ride) and have breakfast at Brennan's (you can walk to Arnaud's, Brennan's, NOLA and the Rib Room easily from the Royal Sonesta.
Also Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse and the House of Blues.

Our first trip to N.O., we stayed at the Hotel Moteleone on Rue Royale in the French Quater. What a nice hotel! For the accomodations, the rates are reasonable, too.

Last time, we took the boat tour to the battlefield. Definitely worth it! The Aquarium of the Americas is really something (this is the one that had that bad accident where the folks the fell into the big tank.) Don't let that scare you.

If you can put the $$$ together, I recommend Emeril's Delmonico. I wasn't impressed by Brennan's (my menu was filthy) - but, I had a cold that night and couldn't taste much. The Commander's Palace is a must-do if you can. (This town is all about eating.) For an entertaining half day in the French Quarter, try the Cooking School of New Orleans. I went the last time we were there, and it was a lot of fun. Plus, you get a great lunch!

Whatever you chose, have a blast!!!

Also did the Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse. Excellent steak and atmosphere. There is supposed to be another steak place I read about in the casino downtown that might be worth checking if you like steak.
