New Orleans trip report
Just back from a couple of days in NOLA. Weather was perfect for strolling around after all those wonderful meals.
We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Astor on Canal with a side entrance on Bourbon St. Excellent location. Our room was very nice...$79/night.
First night we dined at Feelings Cafe. The best meal we had this trip. We were in the little courtyard with all the french doors opening onto the bar. The bartender was playing Edith Piaf tapes: La Vie en Rose, etc. Perfect. Everything we ate practically floated off the fork it was so lightly battered. The Duck Bigarade was to die for! I had the "Gulf Fish Dressed" and it was excellent, too. Good wine, good cheesecake, good service. It's not in a good neighborhood, though, so take a cab if you're headed that way.
We had brunch at Galatoire's and dinner the second night was at Commander's. Both were very good, but Feelings won the prize on this trip. (Though nobody makes turtle soup better than Commanders!)
Did some shopping at Canal Place and Magazine street in the Garden District. Didn't break the bank, but there are some great shops (where one COULD break the bank if one were so inclined).
All in all, a great 2-day getaway.

$120 for the Castle Inn? Wow. You can do much better. The city had sued to shut this inn down a couple of years ago but it has been tied up in court. I live near it (lower Garden District) and the neighborhood association was involved in the court case.

JB,
We stayed at the Crowne last year. We had to drop by this trip to see how the finished lobby looked. They did a good job!
We'd stay there again. We ate at the Bourbon House. We'd eat there again.
Looks like a lot of us FFFs were in The Big Easy last weekend!

I don't know or remember why the city was trying to shut down the Castle Inn but it's an interesting place. I just saw the place featured on the Travel Channel last week or so because they have a resident ghost. They were interviewing some guy from the New Orleans Ghost Tour about the history of the place. The building's outside staircase is huge by the way!
