New Orleans Taxi Fare from Airport to Convention area
I did a quick search search but didn't see anything addressing transportation from MSY to a hotel in either the French Quarter or the Convention area of NOLA. I'm assuming we don't need a rental car, but I was curious as to a ballpark figure of taxi fare.
Also, is the FQ near the Convention Center? Are both areas safe and interesting?
Thanks for any assistance.

They have a flat fee for taxis from the airport to the French Quarter of about $28 for 2 people. Shuttles are slightly less. The difference is that the shuttle might be dropping a few people off at different hotels. Some people hate this. We consider it a free tour.

Shuttles are $13 per person and are not very dependable, clean or courteous in New Orleans. Cabs are $28 for one or two people (same price, basically, when traveling with two) and are quicker, equally unclean and mostly friendly.
I always take cabs.

Dan - that was not my experience. I've taken the shuttle at least four times, each time they were clean, the driver's were friendly, and I never had to wait more than 15 minutes for a departure. As another poster said, they do make stops enroute but, in my case, never more than two and I did view them as an opportunity to see a little more of the area.

Why wait at all? Hope in a cab and GET THERE especially when it's only $2-3 more and you don't have to listen to fellow visitors yammer on and on in a packed van!
To each his own, of course.
Still, I would only take the shuttle if I was solo and on a strict budget.

One side of the convention center is conected to a mall that goes on to connect to the Hilton hotel at the other end. (I would not hang around this area other than for conventin events.) Other than that - the area is quite dreary. Between the Hilton and the French quarter is a casino.
Obviously the French quarter is interesting - and while parts are quite tacky - safe on the major streets.

Thanks for all the great responses. It sounds like a taxi is the way to go since there will be two of us.
If I may be greedy, I'd love to impose upon all your expertise with some more questions: It looks like we'll be staying in the convention center area, since that's our reason for being there. I've been told it's also known as the warehouse district, but that it's OK. Is that true? I was also told that the convention center is right next to riverwalk. Is that a decent/interesting place to visit?
Thanks again.
