New Orleans - Sheraton or Marriott?

I am attending a conference in New Orleans and have a choice of either the Sheraton or the Marriott as conference hotels. Any thoughts/recommendations/experiences on either hotel?

Sue,
I can't stress this enough, do not stay at the Marriott if it is the one that is not right near the river/casino.

The one further up Canal Street, in the Central Business District, was a dump. Thin walls, and a dangerous walk through the housing projects in "Storyville" to get to the French Quarter.

I think the Sheraton is nearby, it just seems like a safer location. I stayed there several years ago and it was fine. I think that is the one connected to the Superdome.

From there, you will need to take a cab at night to the Quarter.

Sue,
We've stayed at both hotels and if they are the ones on Canal between Decatur and Chartes, they are fine. They are both the stereotypical big name corp hotels and lack the NOLA atmosphere.

While the Sheraton was nicer, better bar, IMO, the Marriott had the Fr Quarter right out it's backdoor, saving a sometime death-defying trip across Canal after a few Hurricanes in the FQ.

I think the hotel Phil may be thinking that is connected to the S'dome is the Hyatt Regency???

Kal,
I probably am confusing the Hyatt and the Sheraton as I stayed there about 7 years ago.

However, the Marriott I mentioned is fresh (seared one could say) in my mind as I stayed there only 2 years ago. In that case, I am clearly thinking of the one in the Central Business District. I live in NY and even I was fearful on the cab ride from the Marriott to the Freench quarter via the projects.

Sorry if I confused anyone.

I stayed at the Marriott at 555 Canal Street twice, both for conventions. I enjoyed the location. It's on the main boulevard. Head out the back door and you're in the French Quarter. Do not go to New Orleans the weekend after Thanksgiving, however. There is an annual football game held in town and it's taken over by college students. Not fun!

Phil, there's always been just one Marriott in New Orleans and it's the highrise property across from the Sheraton on Canal. Perhaps you were thinking of another Marriott brand? There are some Courtyard properties downtown but all are in okay locations. The only hotels that are in the area you suggested are the Radisson, Days Inn and Crescent (former Ramada) on Canal. The Hyatt's somewhat remote but they operate a shuttle to the FQ so you don't need to walk it anyway!

Mea culpa, maybe it was the Radisson. Perhaps I had a few to many cocktails at the Napolan House that weekend! Given how bad it was, I probably have blocked some details from my memory!

Sorry for the confusion, didn't mean to clutter up the discussion.

I'd pick the Marriott, you don't have to cross Canal Street (which can be a pain. There really isn't much difference.

Phil, I bet it was the Radisson. Your description matches it perfectly.
