New Orleans Restaurants
 

Hello, I would like some information about some New Orleans restaurants. We will be in New Orleans in early July.

We are planning to eat at Cafe Maspero, Gumbo Shop, Mandinas, Port of Call, Deanie's, Muriel's, Petunia's and Commander's Palace for Sunday Brunch.

Do you have any comments about any of these restaurants or suggestions for others that won't break the bank?

I can't imagine a trip to New Orleans without a trip to Acme Oyster House. Lots on the menu besides oysters, great shrimp poboys. Also, I really like the muffaletta (sp) sandwiches at Napoleon House. The purists will say you shouldn't eat them warm as they're prepared there, but they are really good.

I've only had a drink at Port of Call, it's certainly not fancy, but the burgers looked great.

We had a fairly good meal at Red Fish Grill on our last visit. Also, the newer Brennan restaurant which is right across the street fromt here (can't recall the name).

It's hard to find really bad food in New Orleans, some is just better than others.

I agree that Acme Oyster is a great casual place.

We had a great Valentine's dinner at Muriel's. Excellent but not pricy. Great location to have an after-dinner Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's. ((b))

Last time I was there we went to a nice little french pastry/sandwich shop called La Madeline. It's on the corner by St. Louis cathedral & Jackson Sq. Great for breakfast or lunch.

If you like cooking or to get a feel for the local cuisine, the New Orleans School of Cooking is great for a lunch!
We really enjoyed the 2 hour cooking demonstration along with the lunch provided. After showing you how to make Gumbo, Jambalaya, prailines and bread pudding...you get to take recipes home! I've used them many times and it's a wonderful cultural experience.

While in NO last fall, we ate breakfast at Petunia's, and lunch at The Gumbo Shop. I recommend both - and they are reasonably-priced. We had a great dinner at Dante's Kitchen - over in the River Bend area via the St. Charles streetcar. But, with over 3,000 restaurants in the city, you're choices are nearly unlimited - depends on what you're looking for, and your budget.

Thanks so much to all of you for your replies. It sounds like maybe we should put Acme back on our itinerary!

I would like to try a cooking class someday but Hubby does not want to join in. Maybe on a future trip with a friend. I have heard that they are very entertaining.

We also ate at Red Fish Grill and enjoyed it. There so many restaurants that I would like to try!

If you haven't been to Muriels before, ask them to show you the rooms upstairs--all that wicked red velvet!
(Not the mention impeccable service and very good food.)

If you go to ACME, go early. We never ate there but every time we passed it there was at least 10-15 people in line.

We thought Commander's Palace was delicious and we ate at the GUMBO SHOP twice. If you like spices, buy the GUMBO SHOP's spice mix. We have used hal of it in the past 3 weeks that we've been back home!

We loved Bayonna's in the French Quarter-- it is not cheap but it is romantic and fantastic!

The chef is one of the Great Chefs of New Orleans....

I would skip Deanie's and head to Brunnings'. I think the frying is better. Prices are almost identical. Brunning's also has the biggest (and best) broiled flounder, if you don't want fried. The sweet potato fries are awesome! I live in New Orleans and agree with you plans, except for Deanie's.

Another good "local" place is Michael's Mid-City Grill. Okay, my next door neighbor is co-owner, but they do have one of the best shrimp po-boys in the city. Burgers are excellect, also. Several daily specials are always changing. Have fun!

I go to Deanie's almost weekly. Love those boiled potatoes and the grilled fish dishes are fantastic! Fried stuff's pretty good, too. It is what they're famous for.

When there last summer we went to Brigtsen's, which you take the trolley through the Garden District to basically the end of the line, I think? It was a very pleasant trip to see the homes etc along the line and for a nominal cost.

Brigtsen's is located in among some other shops, restaurants etc. there. It was the best meal we had in New Orleans and they have an early bird special, I think until 5:30 p.m. that was only about $24 or so for a prix fixe meal.

Would recommend it highly. It is considered one of the best of New Orleans.

When in Nawlins, I always try and eat at least one meal at Emmerils joint NOLA.

Main courses $18-$26; 3-course "Early Evening" dinner (Tues-Thurs 5:30-6:30pm) $17.

You have some great choices picked out. Wear loose clothes so you don't explode!! Take cash to eat at Maspero's. They don't do credit but there is an ATM inside. The sandwiches are HUGE!

4khansen, Brigtsen's was on our list of restaurants, but I had to cancel our reservation because we couldn't get to it due to the Parades in February.

Their menu really looked good. I will definitely go there next time. ((b))

4Khansen, We would like to try Brigtsen's but we will be in New Orleans in July and I am a little worried that sitting on the street car for an hour may be too HOT! If we get a semi cool day though, we will try it.

Benj, You made me laugh! Yes, loose clothing is the ticket. And probably 5 pounds to lose when I return home.

We love New Orleans food! It is one of the main reasons we love to return to New Orleans!

You cannot miss Uglesich's. It is a hole in the wall- only open for lunch. Well kept secret (even thought both Emeril and Martha have done shows from there). It's primarily seafood (very reasonable). Without a doubt the most fantastic food I have ever had. 1238 Baronne Street

We have been to Uglisiches and I agree the food is very good. A little expensive, but very tasty! I love the fried green tomatoes! Thanks again, Laurie
