New Orleans restaurant recommendations
 

I am looking for a couple of nice restaurants for dinner in the Garden district in New Orleans. my husband and i like all kinds of food. In addition, how about a good place for breakfast (besides Cafe du Monde & Brennan's). Thanks so much for your help

I second Camellia Grill. Best breakfast ever!

We had a four-course dinner at Commander's Palace in the Garden District but were not very much impressed (however, it is not expensive).

For an authentic New Orleans meal, we liked Tujuages most (in the French Quarter).

There are scads of excellent eateries in this city.

i enjoyed herbsainte in nola.

The Upperline has always been pretty good, and the chef there has recently gotten some publicity. It's just a little toward the park from the Garden District.

But my all-time favorite is just across the strip-mall parking lot.....L

For breakfast we loved Stanley's in the FQ. Yummy.

We enjot Brigsten's in the river bend area. Where the St Charles streetcar makes the 90 degree turn ontpo Carrolton.

I'm so glad Brigtsen's has reopened! We had dinner reservations there for what turned out to be an aborted trip due to Hurricane Katrina (we were supposed to be in NO a couple of weeks after the hurricane hit). We didn't get there on our trip in May of this year, but we did eat at:

Commander's Palace - very good, not the best I've ever had. Much less stuffy than we expected. Prices in line with dinner out at a good restaurant in most big cities.

Emeril's - outstanding, both food and service. Noisy though.

Mila - very very good food. The ambiance was quiet, it's a hotel restaurant (in the Renaissance Pere Marquette).

Bayona - loved the place. Liked the food very much, but weren't "blown away".

Favorite breakfast places were Camellia Grill and Johnny's Po-Boy (a real dive, but with excellent breakfast). Least favorite - Mother's (despite the line to get in, the food is not good). My muffaletta at Cooter Brown's (college bar near Tulane) was great!

My favorites in the GD and Uptown are Commander's Palace, Coquette, Lilette, Upperline, Cafe Atchafalaya, Patois, Clancy's and Brigtsen's.

Surrey's in the GD has an outstanding breakfast. Have lunch in the GD or Uptown and explore Magazine Street in the 3,000 to 5,000 block range and visit the neat shops and stores there. Take the St. Charles Streetcar.

Camellia Grill has a place in the FQ on Chartres now and it serves alcohol.

Also loved the two times we dined at Lillette - great neighborhood spot. It's has been a couple of years.

Although we never ate at Herbsaint due to not being seated within an hour of our reservation, I emailed chef, and he was sincere in apology and offered us return as his guest. That type of customer service after a failure goes a very long way in my book.
