New Orleans question for Dan and others
 

Dan : we have been to NO many times. Stayed at Fairmont, Sheraton, Monteleone, Cornstalk, whatever W was , Doubletree etc. Eaten at Commanders Palace, Palace Cafe, Two Sisters but not the other "names". Done the ferry, the zoo, aquarium, trolley, cooking class,Magazine St and still want more. (Is there a better city in America?)
What in your opinion is the ultimate New Orleans weekend?

I have seen you post many times for NO questions so I know you've done a lot. I won't claim to have the "Ultimate" weekend plans. My favorite weekends still are just walking the Quarter - French Market, Decatur, Cathedral area - watching the "shows" across from the church, Royal, etc. I also love wandering Magazine and having lunch outside at Cafe Rani or the Bulldog and watching the sites. Went back for my birthday in October, took the riverboat cruise, drank a few beers at Crecent City Brewhouse, dinner at Dick & Jenny's uptown, out on Frenchman St for music. I don't live there anymore but still can't get enough! One thing you didn't mention is the D-Day Museum? Have you been there yet? Also, a cemetary or Garden District walking tour? How about the Fairgrounds? I belive there are races through March. Just throwing out ideas for those who have done the "usual"!

I do remember a very emotional Sunday morning when we accidently were at the Cathedral for the annual Memorial for fallen firemen and policemen. Bless them all.
When we go we have kept to a very circumscibed area--the "Quarter" that I know there are many more opportunities.
Have you ever done any of the salvage yards?

Have you been to the Art Museum in City Park? Very nice, and a nice sculpture garden next to it.
Cafe Degas is a charming bistro nearby on Esplanade--have a nice lunch, then the Museum (or Museum, then nice dinner)

Tough questions! I'll try my best based on what you've said you've already done.

Dining: try Bayona, Peristyle, Marigny Brasserie, Indigo, or Rene' Bistro.

Attractions: D-Day Museum, New Orleans Museum of Art, more Magazine Street (it always changes!), Mardi Gras World, the Louisiana State Museums at Cabildo/Presbytere, the new Canal streetcar, Frenchmen Street in the Marigny, and 360 nightclub with its views of the city at night.

There is an architecture salvage yard on Tchopitoulas; up a bit. Sorry I can't give you an exact location.

My favorite thing to do is going to Vaughn's on Thurs nite to listen to Kermit Ruffins. It's a real NO experience in a not-so-great area. Take a cab.

There is an artist who hangs out in Jackson Square (sometimes), Eric B(last name begins w/B). He has some cool stuff.

I also like checking out what's going on at Barrister's gallery on O.C. Hailey. It's a terrible area, but great art.

Always good and cheap breakfast at the Bluebird on Prytania.
